What is a "normal" pressure for my cartridge filter

It's also possible that the pump is a 2-speed. At low speeds on my Intelliflo (~1000 rpm), my filter pressures were less than 5 psi when they were new 3 years ago. Even now, they are only about 7-8 psi.

Pool upgrades are they worth it

Woops. Didn't realize this thread was three pages long. I replied to the last post on the first page thinking that it was a recent question. From the pictures, it looks like you've already settled on an ET controller.

Pool upgrades are they worth it

Yes, the PS is already mounted in the ET4. Even better, you can use the ET to control the settings of the IC20. Whereas the IC20 control pad only has power settings in 20% increments, the ET can control it in 1% increments. If you get the wireless controller option, then I'm pretty sure that all...

Draining Pool -- Risk of floating shell?

The PB told us at the time that they put it in every build. Could be the area, or just being conservative. I got my estimates from the Western Municipal Water District water quality report http://www.wmwd.com/pdfs/WMWD_CCR_2009_WEBFINAL.pdf FWIW, when the pool was first filled, the hardness...

Draining Pool -- Risk of floating shell?

Thanks for the advice everyone. Bruce, I respect your opinion (better safe than sorry, in this regard). I stopped draining my pool last night with the water about 12-15" below the normal waterline. I may drain some more tonight, but I won't go any more than 16" or so. As for CH levels, my...

Draining Pool -- Risk of floating shell?

I guess I should add that about 2 years ago, I did a partial drain of about 15" of water. Considering that the last two years have been pretty dry, wouldn't it be fairly safe to assume that the water table is lower than it was 2 years ago? That wasn't meant to be a rhetorical question. I know...

Draining Pool -- Risk of floating shell?

I agree that the cost of the water is not that great. I was mostly hoping to take advantage of the low CH in the rainwater. I was under the impression that hydrostatic valves were required by code no matter where the pools were built in CA.

    Signed contract today

Congrats. I have similar equipment, and I have been very satisfied with the Pentair equipment. Keep in mind that your Pentair equipment is eligible for a 3-year extended warranty at no cost (although I'm not sure if you need to purchase a heater to qualify). I had to use that warranty just...

Draining Pool -- Risk of floating shell?

Here in Southern California, we are in the midst of a series of storms that are expected to drop about 6-12 inches of rain over the course of 4-5 days. I'm using this as an opportunity to do a partial drain of my pool, which has very high calcium hardness values (over 1000 ppm). I figure: free...

    Intelliflow spa/heat issue

I've got a similar setup, at least for the pool anyway. I believe I've got my Intelliflo running about 1800 rpm when running the heater with no issues. I have a bypass valve so I need to make sure that the valve is in the right position.

Pool lights filled with water?? Danger??

Well I went ahead and repaired the light. It wasn't too bad, but the 60 degree water certainly caused some temporary numbness in my arm. Fortunately, the socket wasn't damaged in any way yet. I think there is a grounding wire inside the fixture that trips the GFCI before the water reaches the...

Pool lights filled with water?? Danger??

Waste: Good point. I will see if I can reach the lights without getting in the pool. Thanks. Changing the subject a little bit, has anyone ever tried using a compact fluorescent light bulb in a pool light? I know they won't be as bright, but I don't really need it to be very bright. I was...

Pool lights filled with water?? Danger??

Bummer. I just called Pentair Tech Support to inquire about warranty status. Their 3-year warranty program only applies to colored lights. Standard lights are only warranted for 1 year. Just FYI... I wonder if the light is even useable any longer. The Pentair tech suggested that I could...

Help - All New Equipment - Goldline Controls w/Intelliflo?

I have the Easytouch/IC40/Intelliflo 4x160 combo and I find it to be a very cost effective solution. I never even need to touch the intelliflo control panel, as all speed adjustments can be made from the easytouch. If you are really set on the Goldline, why not just buy the Intelliflo VF? The...

Holy O-Ring, Batman - Hayward DE filter O-Rings

It could be even simpler than that. It's very possible that the O-ring is a standard size. I find McMaster-Carr (mcmaster.com) to be a pretty decent source for stock O-rings. Probably much cheaper than the OEM part as well.

Pool lights filled with water?? Danger??

Well, I tried to turn on the lights a couple nights ago, and both lights will not turn on. Interestingly, the breaker did not trip. I'll have to open up my Easytouch to see if there's an internal breaker that needs to be reset. So...at this point, I'm pretty sure that it is in fact water that...

Pool lights filled with water?? Danger??

So the consensus seems to be that it is in fact water behind the lens. I will attempt to verify tonight. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't some type of common optical illusion. Pool Clown: Thanks, I hadn't thought about the warranty angle. These were, in fact, purchased as part of the...

When is your water too cool for a dip?

I just took a dip this afternoon after my 8-year old daughter begged and pleaded with me to swim with her. The temperature was 69 degrees and dropping.

Pool lights filled with water?? Danger??

I've got two pool lights. If I recall, the lights are made by Pentair. They are 500W, 120 VAC and installed in Hayward niches. The pool was built about 3 years ago. A couple of weeks ago, I was cleaning my pool and noticed a horizontal line across each of the lights. At first, I thought it was...

    Anyone ever try using Caltreat

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll pass on it for the time being. Oddly, this product isn't even on their website even though it's already hit retail stores.

    Anyone ever try using Caltreat

I was in a local pool store a couple of weeks ago and saw something on the shelf called Caltreat from United Chemical. The claim was that it could reduce CH levels by about 200 ppm in a 14k pool. Apparently, it works as some type of sequestrant and the calcium gets trapped in the filter. Since...

Problem with my IC40 Easytouch 4 setup

Thanks, I had my water tested on Saturday at Leslies, and the CH was 500, so not as bad as I was expecting. I will do another partial drain this winter.

Problem with my IC40 Easytouch 4 setup

Update: The Pentair warranty station in my area came out on Monday to replace the salt cell. Everything is working fine now. I'm concerned that this might become a recurring problem, but kudos to Pentair for taking care of me quickly and efficiently.

Problem with my IC40 Easytouch 4 setup

I got a call from the warranty center on Saturday. He's going to be out to the house today, and I believe he's going to go ahead and replace the cell. He didn't ask me to be there, so I figure he's not going to bother doing much troubleshooting. Oddly, the cell has been working, albeit...

Problem with my IC40 Easytouch 4 setup

I've cleaned the cell twice now. On Wednesday night, I cleaned it per the instructions in the manual using 1 part of acid to 4 parts water. It seemed to do the trick, but less than two hours later, the light was blinking again. I called Pentair tech support and explained the situation. They...

Problem with my IC40 Easytouch 4 setup

I've had this setup ever since my pool was built in March 2007. Last summer, everything worked flawlessly. I ran my pump about 12 hrs per day and had the Intellichlor set to around 15-18 percent. My chlorine levels were consistently in the 4-7 ppm range, depending on swimmer load. This summer I...

Electricity costs for my pool pump

Not certain about DWP, but SoCal Edison has an exemption for the VF. That pump does not require a controller, because it has built-in timer functions. Check to see if DWP has a similar exemption.

    Doing the Borate Thing.....

I too am considering this. One concern I have is whether the borates are safe for small children. My kids are 5 and 2, and I expect that they will be swimming 3-4 hours/day every day this summer. Should I wait a couple of years, just to be safe?

CH at 900. Do I need to drain and fill immediately?

You know, I hadn't even thought about evaporation as being a primary culprit in hardness buildup. The water quality where I am (Murrieta, CA) is not quite as high as Pleasanton, (291 average hardness, 80 as calcium), but it is in the same range. We may have higher evaporation rates here...
