Since you shocked it tonight I would pull the filter out and keep the water circulating overnight. Dead algae is probably what is clogging your filter, not the DE.

Was your pool cloudy? Is that why you went to the pool store for advice? How are you chlorinating your pool? Chlorine tablets? How often do you shock?

Maybe or you might have gotten DE well embedded into each filter. I would assume it would be very difficult to get the DE out of the cartridges.

Just turn your filter off for the night. You could get a new cartridge tomorrow. Perhaps you could soak that filter to clean it.

Just a note for others reading this in the future: While you can add DE to a sand filter for increased performance. You would never add 7 pounds of it. Follow directions here>> Add DE To A Sand Filter I use it especially when we have a lot of pollen.
