If the reccomended concentration of active chlorine for a rezidential pool is arround 0.1 ppm why the reccomended level of bromine are 2-4 ppm and not 0.2 ppm?

An abandoned pool has often a lot of organic debris. In time this will ferment and it may degrade to acetic acid ++++. Chlorine may react with this resulting in chloroacetate. This is something that no one wants in the swimming pool water.

Take a clean pipe and sample the water between the boulders. I suspect this is an area with defficient circulation and the chlorine might not be even distributed. Measure in the place where you suspect a problem.

Bromine is sensitive to UVB. It make sense to use a solar cover. It will prevent the bromine depletion and will reduce a lot the amount of sanitiser requested for proper pool sanitation. I am maintaining a pool with bromine in the South of France and the solar cover makes a big difference.
