THanks Borjis, are you referring to the risk of floating up?

Drain pool and leave empty before refinishing?

Thanks RObbie, good to know...I was actually not even thinking of pool floating up, I read that the water table here in AZ is at 600 ft! I was more concerned if the sun exposure could do damage to the gunite somehow...

Drain pool and leave empty before refinishing?

In Arizona and need to refinish plaster pool. Plaster is in bad shape and probably really old. Going with pebblectec. Also not going to be using the pool till next season due to travels. So was wondering if there would be any problem with draining it now and then refinishing next April in time...

Pool deck drainage? what do the channels do and how? Pics included

Thanks for the link otter. That is useful. My concern is that the trim a slab will still have small gaps and maybe shrink in the sun. With the caulk, I imagine one can go over it...

Pool deck drainage? what do the channels do and how? Pics included

That makes sense. I wonder why it was not just left open like the rest of the patio. What are you thinking of using to fill them in, I have used self-levelling poly urethane caulk. That has worked well but there is one location where I see it is starting to separate.

Pool deck drainage? what do the channels do and how? Pics included

I have these plastic-covered channels all around my pool. Most do not lead anywhere, they just run into more concrete. They are covered channels that are double deckered. So a shallow square channel over a deeper v channel (see pic 2). I am in AZ, we dont have much rain. We do have scorpions...

My findings on how not all sand is created equal

Just reporting back. My laterals measured about .45 mm (Hayward S244T old screw in style laterals). But I could force a .55 mm feeler through without much effort. Additionally, when I pulled my laterals out there were many sand grains already wedged firmly in the lateral slits. This cannot be...

My findings on how not all sand is created equal

Wow! thats some good information JamesW. It makes sense that Hayward would specify the smallest size, to prevent smaller grains from entering the laterals. Though just looking at the larger grains in the pictures posted here. A lot of those grains are much bigger than 1 mm. So I don't think...

My findings on how not all sand is created equal

Huh! thats interesting and frustrating. Thanks for the info Divin Dave My Hayward ST244 manual has the following line "Use only High Rate Sand No. 20 Silica Sand (.45mm - .55mm)". Unless they are referring to radius, I will write and ask them and report back. It could explain why ~ 300 lbs of...

My findings on how not all sand is created equal

Thanks Duraleigh. That's what I figured too. The part I cannot reconcile is, based on the photographs the larger grained sand looks much bigger than the .45 - .55 mm size that is usually recommended. So should't the sand grains be smaller and in the .45mm to .55mm range? Also, US # 20 sieve...

My findings on how not all sand is created equal

I'm having trouble understanding this here. Can someone help me out, thanks! My manual says the sand should be #20 (.45 - .55)mm. The HTH sand in the picture looks huge. Definitely most grains are not sub mm. Am I reading this wrong? Also, this Wikipedia page...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

Okay, I sorted it out. Turns out that the diverter assembly from Haywards does not come with O-rings that are supposed to be mounted on it. So there is a set of O-rings on the stem of the diverter. Duh! Just did not notice. Assumed that I could plug and play. Now to remove the O-rings from the...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

So I took a look at it in the cold light of day. The leak is from the center of the valve where the handle fits into the rest of the structure. I am certain it is leaking because the handle is loose. But here is the odd part. When I unscrew the whole assembly the handle becomes stiff and tight...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

No, its leaking from the top of the multiport. Its hard to tell from where exactly. Will check again tomorrow. But it looks like its coming out of where the top of the multiport screws onto the base. I think it is something to do with the fact that the handle is loose. It moves up and down (sky...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

So to give an update. I was able to replace the diverter unit. I found that if you screw the 6 screws holding the top down first, then it becomes a simple matter to insert the pin. The screws compress the spring for you. So thats a tip for anyone else that needs to do this. However, I am having...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

Yes, I think so. It definitely looks worn out. I am curious as to why you say it is a pain to replace the diverter part...it seems to be simply a matter of screwing the upper part back on. Unless, and I cannot tell from the picture on poolzoom, the diverter does not include the handle assembly...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

So I took apart my multiport (was much simpler than I thought) and inspected the gasket. Problem is I am not sure what it is supposed to look like. It does look like only one "arm" of the spider gasket has a ridge on it. The rest of them are all well worn down. It really is to such an extent...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

As far as I can tell there is no sand coming out the waste line. I have not yet taken apart the multiport. Company is expected tomorrow so don't wont to break it further. Was planning to take it apart after they leave. For now, the waste line runs via backwash hose into the pool when its...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

Thanks for your reply, Smykowski. But Grrr... thats too bad. Could it be anything else that is causing the problem. Would replacing the simple O-ring that they do sell for the head help. I have seen some people just put a cheap valve on the waste line. Would that work as a temporary fix? I am...

Where to buy Spider Gasket for Hayward Sand filter S144T

Hello All, My Sand Filter is leaking out the waste line. So it seems like I need to replace the spider gasket. Its a Hayward S144T Pro Series Sand Filter. Problem is I cannot seem to find a spider gasket for this filter. Anyone can point me to where I can order one of these. I see links to...

How to fill Expansion joints in pool deck (pics)

Thanks bmoreswim, thats a good site. Seems like gun-grade is the way to go. I am looking at my deck and patio and you are right, there is not much that the drainage channels are doing. Will test more later today but I do not think I will lose much by caulking them up.

How to fill Expansion joints in pool deck (pics)

Hmmm, do not want to lose the drainage if that is important... not quite sure of what how it functions... drainage from where... the channels do not lead into the pool... or seem particularly graded.

How to fill Expansion joints in pool deck (pics)

So my pool deck has plastic strips (zip strips) placed in the expansion joints that are now worn out and coming apart. It looks ugly and I think it is not fulfilling its function. I want to rip the plastic strips out. I was wondering what would be my best bet to replace it with. Mastic, DeckO...

    Sand/dirt in pool

Thanks for that. Will be trying it today. I was wondering if you have the same problem after backwashing? Is it less? That would surely indicate that it is a pump/filter issue and not a chemistry issue. If you start after vacuuming, so your pool is clean. Then backwash and rinse. and then...

    Sand/dirt in pool

Is it possible your pump is oversized and pushing too much GPM through your filter? Do you get the same result regardless of the speed of your pump? Also, what kind of socks are you using on the returns and how do you attach them. I want to try the same thing in my pool. For me the pool remains...

    Sand/dirt in pool

So what happened I wonder. I have the same problem with the exact same filter. It seems to have started about a month ago. Though in my case its only when my two speed pump is on high. I can vacuum on low and I dont see anything coming from the returns. Once, I switch it to high, then its a...
