    Hi from Texas

+1 on what everyone else said on OCLT and performing another CYA test. You have been flirting with the minimums recently and dipped significantly below one, so hopefully nothing is brewing but if it is it should be a quick SLAM. Hopefully its low CYA and that is the perfect opportunity to...

Could my waterfall basins be the cause of my recurring algae issue?

At 50 CYA and a FC of 5, you are below the target range (6-8). Your pool is telling you it needs more chlorine, listen to it. Below is a chart I put together to help visualize the target ranges. When adding chlorine, I would target 8-10 and let it drift down to the target range. If you...

Need diagnosis - SLAM not helping

What is your goal? If draining to reduce CYA the reduction will be proportional to how much you drain. So if you want to cut the CYA in half, then drain half the pool. If you want to drop your CYA from 100 to 30, then drain 70% of your pool. If it were me, I would drain more than half and...

    Hi from Texas

Take a look at your pressure gauge and note that as your clean pressure. Keep an eye on it and when it goes up by 25%, its time to clean again. My guess is that it would need to be done later in the swim season. https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/2019/01/18/routine-pump-filter-maintenance/

    Hi from Texas

I have 2 "modes" for my skimmer basket: 1. Heavy leaf/pollen season (Nov - April for me) - I get lots of stuff in my skimmers and do not use a skimmer sock and have an extended handle so I can empty the skimmer without reaching my hand through leaves and stuff. 2. Skimmer sock season (May -...

    Best robot for pool

My pool looks to be a similar size as yours and goes from 3'8" to 6' deep and a fairly steep slope. I literally bought it yesterday and ran it twice yesterday (1 wall+floor for about 2 hours, then I ran a floor only cycle for about another hour). After that it was red, indicating it needed...

    Best robot for pool

If helpful, I just picked up one of these yesterday from Walmart to replace my dolphin style robot that bit the dust. Its under $500 and gets the floor, walls, and tile. For half the cost of my old cleaner, I'm happy so far (only used it twice). (If the link doesn't work, its an Aiper Scuba...

    Hi from Texas

I'm not following your math (unless you are talking the entire summer maybe). If you need half a gallon of LC per day that's about $3 per day or $90 per month. If helpful, I'm going on year 5 of my SWG and hoping to get by this full swim season before I need another ($1,500 total or $300 per...

I cannot get rid of this slight haze

Good news on the OCLT. I do not have a sand filter, but I've seen reports that they actually filter better when slightly dirty. As odd as it sounds, backwashing every day could be counterproductive.

31% acid has gone from store shelves and 14% remains the only option

I checked Gilbert, AZ and both Lowes and Home Depot only had the 14%, but Ace Hardware in Gilbert still had the good stuff. https://www.acehardware.com/departments/home-and-decor/cleaning-and-disinfectants/specialty-cleaners/12787?qtyRequested=1&deliveryRequested=false

I cannot get rid of this slight haze

For sure no more algaecide or clarifiers. If it were my pool and hazy, I would: 1. Bump up the chlorine. At CYA of 50, your target is 6-8 and you are at the very bottom of that range. Get it up to 8-10 just in case its algae. 2. Do an OCLT to see if you have algae 3. Keep an eye on your...

Pentair Prowler 930 - Wont go forwards

I ended up not being able to fix the dolphin, so I picked up the Aiper Scuba N1 from the local Walmart this afternoon. $489 + $38 for a 3-year warranty/protection plan so I was pretty happy with the price. It did its maiden voyage and I was pretty impressed. It was completely full of...

Pentair Prowler 930 - Wont go forwards

I have a 4 year old Pentair Prowler 930, which is the same as a Maytronics active. During the week I noticed it would turn on, go backwards about 3 feet then stop. I tried troubleshooting last night and it seemed to be the cheap plastic gears that connected the motor to the wheel were going...

    Cold water

If you are in Houston it was warm enough for months. I’m in Dallas and my water hit 70 this week.

    Rocks in a skimmer

Small world. Last year, my 1 year old girl did the same exact thing. I sold her on FB Marketplace to a nice couple in Dallas. I hope they are all doing okay.

Bought new house with pool, sequence of fixing the problem

You got it. 2 gallons of liquid chlorine will get you into the target range. That will get you by a few days, so if you are running to the store, buy 4+ gallons.

Bought new house with pool, sequence of fixing the problem

+ 1 on getting chlorine in the pool ASAP. With water temps flirting with 70's and the swim season quickly approaching, algae will love a 0 FC environment.

    Secondary systems for health concerns...

And unfortunately lots of people set to make $ over people's fears. I totally get your fears, but please take everything you see and hear with a grain of salt, especially if someone is financially motivated to stoke those fears and tell you what you want to hear. My mom had ovarian cancer...

    First time salt for SWG

If you use the PoolMath app, you can use the effects of adding. For a 25k gallon pool, each 40lb bad will add 191ppm of salt.

    What is this red dirt?

The wind has been crazy for the past few weeks. I was getting the unmistakable red dirt puffs on my tanning ledge and steps. That was a first for me in pool ownership, but I finally got it all up and filtered out a week or so ago.

New Member - Need Info on CL Free (Copper Ionization) System

As the others have said, Copper is okay at killing algae, but that comes with a whole series of staining risks and the EPA does not approve copper as a stand-alone sanitizer for your pool and it needs to be supplemented with chlorine. So your choice is either #1 - Chlorine at proper levels +...

Need help or at Least a Little Assurance

Ok, make sure you read up on the SLAM process. With a CYA of 90 your FC target is 35. I would also consider draining some water and retesting CYA and using that SLAM FC number.

    Where is the date code?

I'm sure someone with comment on the specifics for that brand, but I do not see it in your pictures. It is usually printed on the box/bottle during the bottling process so the font is not as professional looking as the box/label itself (just like expiration dates or best by dates you will see...

Looking for advice regarding pool plaster nightmare

Hey neighbor, sorry to hear about your issues. The good news is that there should be tons of companies to work with as seemingly everyone in our area has a pool. If I were in your shoes I would: 1. Look at your contract with the PB, and any other paperwork you have and determine if you have...

Starting new season for pool in East Texas

Just 30 for now. Follow the SLAM process first, then a week+ down the road when you are clear and pass all 3 SLAM exit criteria, you can bump up CYA to 70 and adjust the rest of your #s.

    Hi from Texas

Agreed. You can get a cheaper tree from a big box store, but I vote talking to an expert since pools, fences, and replacement trees are all expensive. Looks like you have lots of various options: https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Tree+Farms&find_loc=Austin%2C+TX...

    Hi from Texas

I went through a local tree farm. They planted them and offered a 6-month warranty, which I would highly recommend because trees are darn expensive.

    Hi from Texas

I sent you my suggestions earlier, but here is a picture of ours: You can see the magnolia on the far right, then 3 Eagleston Hollies. Note I had just trimmed the 3rd holly (hence the mess), the 2 on the left were still untrimmed in this picture. Note you can see the hole where the 4th holly...
