Why does TFP prefer the Taylor SpeedStir to a seemingly more versatile INTLLAB Magnetic Stirrer?

One of the (too few) things I excel at is color vision, and I still turn the Speed Stir light on every, single time I use it. Forgive the oblique pun, but the difference is night and day.

    Overwhelmed but focused

Yeah, the pressure relief valve should be all water if you open it after the pump catches prime. Pressure testing seems like a logical next step to me if you know that the skimmer is getting enough water and you don't see leaks at the pump. You probably know, but just in case, there's a sweet...

You probably have a main drain. I turn mine off while vacuuming. In fact, I turn off everything but the skimmer and vacuum through that.

Does the air in the returns coincide with vacuuming? If so, are you ensuring that you're getting all of the air out of your vacuum hose before connecting it to suction? If vacuuming is frustrating, are you remembering to turn off the flow on other suction ports while vacuuming?

    Simple Scoop by Pool Day

I was in the same position not too long ago. You'll do great if you make TFP your sole source of pool information. Read my words now, believe them later. You'll rarely need anything other than liquid chlorine (like unadulterated bleach), muriatic acid, cyanuric acid, calcium chloride, baking...

Overdose chlorine to account for daily loss?

Invitation accepted. Challenge accepted. I too run a child transportation service, exclusive to two demanding clients, and frequently don't feel like doing much after I've fed them their complimentary dinner each night. Also, despite doing the job for well over a decade now, they've never paid...

Overdose chlorine to account for daily loss?

I feel like this question must have been covered before, but I'm not finding an answer very quickly. I test and top off my chlorine each morning to the highest end (8 ppm) of TFP's recommendation for my current CYA level (50). As expected, FC drops 2-4 ppm each day — it dips out of TFP's ideal...

    Pool Store CYA Test

Background I acquired a new-to-me pool at the end of last season with CYA through the roof. (I refilled recently and that, of course, took care of that.) But before being hip to the TFP ways, I took a sample to a local (independent, I think) pool store. To be clear, this was before the refill...

Thank you for that. It saved the forum some follow-up questions!

Method for adding CYA after a refill

Thanks for the link. I'll be using one of those next time. This time I sacrificed a Goldtoe to the cause.

Method for adding CYA after a refill

All right. The sock method it is. A word to the wise and all that. Thanks, guys.

Method for adding CYA after a refill

I've seen the sock method recommended, and it seems to have some advantages. But is there any reason I shouldn't mix some up with pool water in a five gallon bucket with a paddle mixer and a drill? Would I be standing there mixing for hours or something? My main goal here is to get the CYA in...

Troubleshooting pump that hums but moves no water

Yeah, I definitely need to check on that. From memory, I don't think I saw it in the right position when it was powered off. I'm probably going to let it run overnight and get back into it tomorrow. It was down at least 48 hours.

Sincerest thanks. The markups are especially helpful. I need to double check the placement of those wires.

Troubleshooting pump that hums but moves no water

I'm not finding a model number. I'm betting this is because they replaced the housing as a result of the home inspector finding it to be leaking when we were buying the place. But here's what it looks like.

Troubleshooting pump that hums but moves no water

Thanks, guys! I went out to snap some more photos. I took the retainer clip off the cap, and turned the cap over to get a pic of the terminals. Then I snapped a pic of the wiring and put the cap back and secured it with the retainer. I powered it on to check the voltage (both legs a little...

Troubleshooting pump that hums but moves no water

I believe the motor was installed in April of 2021. It was here when I bought the house, but the owner was in the good habit of writing in-service dates on most of his purchases. I'm happy to take specific pictures of the pump on request, but for now this one shows relevant information:

Troubleshooting pump that hums but moves no water

My pump powers on but isn't moving any water. I can hear it humming when it gets power. I first observed the problem when I turned off the pump to check the strainer basket. It was working fine before I cut the power, and the strainer basket had only a few tiny leaves in it, so I turned the...
