POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Oh Crud... I've been doing it wrong, all along! I've been counting until I see the first shift from clear to red. Usually 9 drops to go from green to clear, and a 10th to go from clear to faint red... I've been calling that 100 ppm. Is this the way all drop tests work, like the...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

I'm partly color blind, but I always thought it only affected my ability to see darker colors, eg. dark blue vs dark green vs black... all look the same to me. But maybe it goes beyond that, because I see that as almost perfect match to 3 ppm? I've added no chlorine the last two days, with no...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

I hear what you're saying. But this was a brand-new sealed pack opened this week, and kept in a dry space. I had planned to toss them, until I saw the pool retailer uses the same strips in their whiz-bang computerized analyzer, and they claim their data is good. My plan was to use the strips...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

I did. First image shows FC and pH, the two parameters for which I'm finding discrepancies. I'll post it again here: If you're interested, I'll also post TC below: The only other test in the K-1004 is Alkalinity, not worth a photo, but it took 10 drops to turn green to clear, and an 11th...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Cool. I'll know that for next time, although I suspect from now on I'll be ordering pre-season. For now, I gotta make do with what I have. Not like I'm shutting down the pool for lack of repeatable test data. Any thoughts on the results?

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Thanks for the advice. Where do you guys normally order your kits, to ensure they're fresh? Amazon didn't have all of what I was ordering. and Taylor reported shipping by UPS ground. I'm in the 1-day zone to them for UPS ground, and they stated that order modifications must be made within 24...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

So, perhaps a few of you will find this interesting. It's been frustrating the heck out of me. First, today's test for FC and pH: To my eye, this looks like FC = 3 and pH = 7.0'ish. I loaded the image above into the computer, picked the colors, and did a full 4th order multivariate match...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Yeah, that was another factor in my decision to order direct, versus going to the pool store to hunt thru dusty kits on their shelves. Figured Taylor would have the least-aged reagents, and I wouldn't expect any pool store to have the total hardness kit.

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Well, I hope not. Because if that's the case, they probably still haven't boxed and shipped my order, as I've received no notification or tracking info from Taylor or UPS recently.

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Yep. Amazon didn't have all of them, so I just went straight thru Taylor site.

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Does Taylor normally send out shipping notification / tracking info? I ordered over the weekend, and expected tracking info / shipment notification on Monday, but so far… nothing. I guess I’ve been spoiled by Amazon.

    Cyanuric Acid - necessary evil?

Not sure. I guess I could remove, dry, and weigh it. I don't have a pre-installed weight, but I could probably get that at the store. Might answer a few questions. I have some trouble with the conspiracy theory repeated here, that they install these materials just to invent a problem, and...

    Cyanuric Acid - necessary evil?

My concern here is staining of stairs (white fiberlgass) and skimmer (white PVC), if I drop scale and stain control, as that Mineral Pac is supposed to last 6 months. I only installed it mid-April, and keep the sanitizer dialed down to its lowest flow rate, due to running solar cover. I think...

    Cyanuric Acid - necessary evil?

Just so I'm clear on what you guys are saying, excepting occasional pH correction, you folks run no chemicals, other than chlorine and CYA? No scale and stain preventer? No Algae preventer? If so, it seems possible I could finish out this season with the Frog system, by simply removing the...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Short season here, too. Still running 55F - 75F here this year, so other than a few hot days, we haven't had any pool weather yet. Water is 87F - 89F, thanks to heater and solar cover, but air is too cold for anyone but the kids to enjoy the water. I ordered K-1515-A, K-1721, K-1503 (for...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Looks like the kit only comes with enough reagent for 6 tests?

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Thanks! I was imagining trying to keep FC at 7.5% of some unknown CYA number, but maybe it doesn't need to be as accurate as I had assumed. Since my K1004 kit doesn't expire until the end of this season, and it seems to work fine for pH and alkalinity, I figure I'll just follow newdude's...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

All of the Taylor CYA test kits seem to make use of a cloudy water test, fill vial until dot at bottom becomes invisible. That has to be horribly inaccurate, I honestly can't even imagine it working consistently. Are there any color-change tests available for CYA, similar to the usual...

    Cyanuric Acid - necessary evil?

Love it. That link is for volume purchase, but I'll find the same or similar model for single purchase. Thanks! I think that's a good plan. Pitcher for this year, excepting the Frog when on vacation, then switch over to SWCG next winter. Thanks!

    Cyanuric Acid - necessary evil?

Not mixing. I was just thinking that perhaps the empty/unused trichlor dispenser would be a good way to inject liquid chlorine into the pool, without having to remove the solar cover everyday. Outside of July, we probably use the pool only a few hours per week. The solar cover is on the pool...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I do hate color-matching, always makes me feel half-colorblind. Which I guess I am. The Alkalinity test I use now uses the same color-change principle as the K1515, and I'm always more confident in that. I'll see if Taylor makes a kit that has both the K1515 contents and...

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

I'm not following. What's wrong with the K-1004 kit I have? Is it just that it stops above 5 ppm, or is it that you think it only tests total chlorine? The K-1004 tests both total and free chlorine separately, but also gives Alkalinity and pH.

POOLNerd vs. pool retailer - who's test is more accurate?

Thanks, guys! My Taylor kit does test both FC and TC separately. Basically, test FC first, then add another reagent to that mix to get TC. Not pretending it's the best kit on earth, I really don't know, but it seemed to hit all the things I was interested in testing at the time... except CYA...
