    Overwhelmed

Ideally you want to add 5PPM per day until you get your test kit. 1 gallon raises your FC by 4.2 If you are using a CYA of 150 in PoolMath, yes it will tell you that you need 6 gallons but we don't know if that CYA number is right. So for now, go with a gallon a day until we get more accurate...

    Overwhelmed

Hello there fellow Pennsylvanian! Definitely skip the clarifier - you have live algae and the clarifier won't help (neither will algaecide don't waste your money on that either). A pool company cannot and will not fix it for you any quicker (if at all) and you will waste a lot of money. You...

Dead Squirrel...General consensus (to slam or not)

    I wouldn't but I'm lazy like that. 🤷‍♀️

    Increasing CYA using chlorine tablets

For the CYA test, you round up to the number - you can't interpret between the lines so your CYA would be measured at 40. The spacing between the lines on CYA viewing tubes varies and is not linear. With all the uncertainties in this test don't bother trying to interpolate between the lines on...

CYA recommended levels: why not stay near the maximum?

Nope, it's really just your preference and what is best for your pool. My pool gets full sun pretty much all day so I run my CYA around 50

Best Places to Buy Liquid Chlorine

Just watch the dates at Ocean State Job Lot. for the longest time, the freshest I could get was the end of January 2024. Finally, last week I got some that had a date of 130 2024

    Dirt in pool

Do you live near any farms or fields? Could it be fertilizer of some sort? What about trees/shrubs around your pool? Is it on your deck furniture, cars, etc or just in the pool?

Green to blue - helping my elderly parents

Hi and welcome! Pool store results are notoriously inaccurate and inconsistent. TFP methods support learning and maintaining your pool by doing your own reliable testing and staying out of the pool stores, whose only goal is to sell you one magic potion after another, and then another to fix...

Heavy Rain - is this normal?

I'd run an OCLT just to make sure it's not something more serious. But with our pool, a ton of dirt does wash in from the concrete and the grass right next to it.

    Where to go from here?

Are you positive it's dead algae? Pollen, dirt, sand could also be possibilities if you have passed all SLAM criteria. If you still feel it's algae, making sure you are brushing and that you scrub down any lights/niches, the skimmer box and weir door, etc.

Inground pool with liner not opened for 12 years 😳

The most concerning thing is that liner corner. The liner almost looks dry rotted? If it just pulled out of the track and they can get it back in, then you could be OK assuming the equipment works and there's no other leaks or tears. Given that it's not been opened or anything else done for...

    Help! Green Swamp

Don't worry about TA or pH right now. Calcium in a vinyl liner pool is not super critical unless you have crazy fill water. Your next step will SLAM. Ideally for a SLAM you want your CYA to be 30 or 40. On that dot test you can't interpret between the lines so round up. If you can see it 80 but...

Inground pool with liner not opened for 12 years 😳

Congrats on the house! I am dying to see what's under that cover. Hard to say what actually needs to be done because there are a lot of unknowns until you get that cover off. It's possible the liner is ripped and may need replaced. If the liner is in good shape, does the equipment work? Does...

Liquid chlorine 4 days old ?

Dang I'm jealous! Our walmart is still the stuff from 2023 and the best my Ocean State Job lot has is end of February.

    Cannot Get Water Clear

Use the Pool Math app and it will tell you how much chlorine you need to get to 5PPM based on your pool size. For my pool, 1 gall on chlorine is 5.3 PPM and my pool is about 24,000. If you are using 12.5% bleach, that's about 1/2 gallon.

Old neglected pool, what to do??

The fact that you've lived there for 5 years through PA winters and spring seasons and the pool has not overflowed and you've not drained it gives me concern that it doesn't hold water and that it just keeps refilling. I lowered our pool this fall well below the returns at closing and by early...

What did you do to your pool today?

I'm so excited I can finally play this game for the season. After opening on Friday and spending a rainy weekend babysitting FC levels, I got the CYA sock going today. Lots of brushing and clearing dead algae. I'm also waiting for my new batch of dpd powder and R0871 reagent to arrive Thursday...

Help! Just opened and not sure what to Balance first

Once we see your test results, I'm curious if you might have ammonia in your pool. One of the signs is the inability to hold chlorine and with adding 16 gallons and then 13 gallons of LC and it going to zero both times could be a sign. But let's what your full results are :-)

    Post partial drain chemical help

There are several experts who live in the Southwest region that will probably be along to help further but you may want to consider the No Drain Water Exchange method. They can also comment on your CH issues as many of them experience extremely hard water. For you CYA round up to 80 - you...

    It’s one of those years…

I feel you. I missed the window on opening clear this year too. We open our pool ourselves but have a company close it and opening it is super easy. I had about 1/2 a home depot bucket worth of worms in the bottom of my pool. Super gross so I did net those out and I did it blindly which sucks...

I waited too long to open

and the pool is green :-( We had temps in the 80's all week, but water temp is barely 60*. There are so many worms and it smells so bad. I am sad.

What did you do to your pool today?

I ordered a new basket for my robot because like a dummy, I left the other one sit outside all winter and it cracked. Tried to super glue it but no such luck. Oh and I renewed my TFP gold supporter donation status. Does that count?! Other than that, I just stare at my cold, covered, pool and...

What’s your water temp - Spring 2024 edition

:oops: {{jealousy}} I'll get in at 78! I'd prefer 80 but we won't get there until July if we're lucky. Right now, it's still too cold to even take the cover off.
