General question, something that's been puzzling me

Can or should a pool overflow from winter snow and spring rain?
I'm asking because I suspect that there is a leak, probably in the skimmer, but I'm not sure.
But no matter how much rain we have had, it never spills over the edge of the pool? I would surmise that if a pool is universally watertight it would eventually overflow or get super close to the top edge of the pool.

I suspect that the leak is inside the skimmer assembly where the basket inserts or close by there.

Anyone have any insight into what might be going on and should my pool in fact be able to overflow?

Thanks everyone.

You might have a purpose-built overflow inside your skimmer that is draining your water for you. It would be on the side of the skimmer above the basket. Some overflows are just below the bottom of the decking. Do you ever see the water rise to the top of the skimmer opening?

Do you have a solid or mesh winter cover ? Or do you go without ? If you had an overflow that would likely be winterized/plugged like the other openings.

Evaporation up here often more or less matches the wet weather, but eventually we get all wet or all dry for a spell and need to correct it one way or the other.

I have a mesh cover. The pump is running, but it seems it lowered faster than I would expect, it has been cool and mostly overcast over the last week or so. I have in the past had the water level higher for longer. What has made me very curious is that with everything sealed up for the winter it has still never overflowed.
As purpose-built overflow makes sense, but I have found anything that looks like it could be that. There is a piece of the inner part of the skimmer that has broken, but it did not look like it would cause a leak. I'm going to try and test that out. But overall very curious about the potential to overflow. I guess I'm sort of locked on the idea, it is just confusing to me, I would have expected it have filled totally once in a while.
