Load DE before initial cleaning/backwashing

Pool was opened yesterday but water level had dropped below skimmers, so had to top off (downpoured too!)

Filter needs to reloaded with DE but I also know I’m going to be backwashing after I vacuum up the Crud in the pool now.

Just cost of doing pool business or should I not load DE until I do the initial vacuuming?
 
my 2 cents....No, you should not run a Diatomaceous Earth (DE) pool filter without DE powder in it. Doing so can damage the filter grids and potentially lead to other problems. The grids are designed to trap the DE, not the pool water's debris. Without DE, dirt will clog the grids, causing them to become damaged and the filter to require cleaning.
