Hello everyone,

I started opening the pool a little early this year, to try and get a head start on things.

it's going well outside of water clarification feeling like its not happening. or is at least slower than i would expect going on 2 weeks now. I would expect to at least be able to see the shadow of any lingering debris on the bottom so that i can more properly target said debris instead of (mostly)randomly vacuuming and hoping i catch anything I have missed previously.

before adding any chems i checked and adjusted PH added CYA to appropriate levels and initiated slamming, water is now cloudy blue and just not clearing.

I decided to try adding a little clarifier(with the expectation of it being largely degraded by the FC) to just kickstart the clarification so that i can better vacuum and brush. I dont think this should be any issue, mainly just posting in verification that this is a valid though generally not needed way to get things going.

thought/opinions are welcome. we had a great tfp season last year, just surprised at how stubborn the water is being to clear enough to see the bottom this year.

Can't really have any with zero pool details and no signature.

You're probably somewhere in between a 12 foot inflatable ring pool with a hot tub filter, and an Olympic sized pool with several 600 lb sand filters.

Kindly narrow it down a little. :)

It happens.

Fill them in, fill us in here in the thread too, and we'll go from there.

Pics of the pool and equipment say 1000 words each. *And* they'll be saved in your media history so anyone can look them up for any future questions you may ask.

Yeah it's dark right now only reason I haven't added any. And details filled in to the best of my ability.

27ft diameter 48" tall roughly 16000-17000gal round above ground.

Tradional above ground, It will rise if given enough time. I wish I had a pic of it currently as I said I'm not not fussed about it being super clear right now. We didn't have a cover so I knew it was going to be a bit of work to get going this year. My expectations are low, slow and patient, but I expected to be clear enough to see shadows of anything on the bottom by now.

There's no foliage for probably 40ft around the pool in any direction so the only thing in it was blown in.

Testing and replacing at a minimum, morning and night, when I'm off work morning, noon, night.

Fc Tested tonight at 18. Slam is still in progress as it hasn't cleared. I expected it to drop to around 15 by morning

More time at SLAM level goes quicker. Do what you can, when you can.

It appears the FC will start holding better soon. Cloudy/milky is either dead or mostly dead algae. Then it's much easier to hold FC while the filter does it's thing.

What kind of filter is it ?

Standard sand filter.

Is I've mentioned my expectations were to better see the shadow of the bottom by now. Not to see it clearly. Just be able to better vacuum and remove offending debris.

So guess I was just a little hopeful.

We do what we can. However, the more often you can do it, the better. Every 2 hours, so if you can do twice in the morning, and a couple times when you get home and before bed the better.
When you are off work, do it every two hours.
These with both help...

You mentioned the FC was 18, whats the CYA ?

Scoop blind with the net. Do your best to maintain a pattern.
yeah thats what ive been doing when i vacuum, but i always seems to find a place ive missed previously.

SLAM is going better than i expected, FC only dropped by 2 this morning to 16. :) the used chlorine was only at 0.5 just time now for clarity.

You'll get it all eventually. Grab a tasty beverage, be patient, and keep at it. (I swear that I know it's easier said than done and I have the easy part here. :ROFLMAO: )

Are you using 18 as your target? Using 45 as your CYA ? We always round up so it would be 50 CYA / slam FC 20 (40%). Its not earth shatteringly significant being so close and way above min, but every little bit helps it move along.

So as the filter gets dirty, the crud traps even finer crud, making it more efficient. This works until the flow is restricted and it becomes counterproductive. You can add DE to speed up the 'slightly dirty' efficiency after backwashing. Only do it when you have the time to babysit the filter until you know how it's responding. It might clog in and hour or two, or 20 mins.

so question, is it normal to see some DE coming out of the return when you add DE? i dont think i saw all of what i was putting in come out, but def could see it coming out.

i feel like it is getting clearer, basically not backwashing it. have yet to see the pressure increase but ive been having really small particles get through my skimmer and start clogging up the pump skimmer so the pressure drops so when i have to empty that i have been backwashing it.
