New to hot tubs

As you proceed with your purge I would be sure to leave the skimmer weir & grate in place to prevent larger debris from getting into the plumbing.
Excited to see your purge pics 🤩
It’s oddly satisfying!

Actually, I just ran Ahhsome (for the first time) two days ago on a new-to-us ten-year-old tub with an unknown
maintenance history that's been in service here since fall. Figured I should do it because I just couldn't seem
to keep my chlorine levels up. We got the brown sludge along with the foam, but not nearly as much as I'd
expected to see. I'll be getting the water back in shape asap and see what kind of difference it made.

Yeah, about that ... I didn't take any photos! My wife wasn't very happy with me either ;)

I have the spa filled as of this evening. I'm waiting on a new filter to be delivered and I will start balancing and sanitizing the water tomorrow. I've been reading up on bromine/bromides, but it sounds somewhat complicated and I'm used to chlorine for my pool, so I will stick to that for the hot tub/spa as well. I'm hoping Wal-Mart or Menards have some dichlor lying around to purchase so I don't have to pay pool-store prices, and grab some liquid chlorine/bleach as well.

I realize this may be too late but don’t delay on sanitizer- get some bleach in there asap.
I buy a 2.25# container of dichlor for about $20 at Walmart- hth brand- its 99% dichlor so should align with
PoolMath calculations.
Some brands are not 99%. It lasts me multiple years
Here’s the guide

Yes, thank you, that's exactly what I did. Took me a few hours to tame my TA from more than 200 down to 50, but also got my dichlor in there in a timely fashion. It's a sunny day today, so I hope to perform a drop test for CYA, but I should be in the 25 ppm range. Switching to liquid chlorine at that point. I had a SNAFU with the filter; the first company sent a skimmer assembly rather than the filter  but an outfit out of Pennsylvania fixed me up. We've been in it a couple evenings and my wife is very happy, which was the goal! (Although, she is very sensitive to what I consider to be very typical spa "smells." We'll have to investigate that further in another topic.)

I would take cya up to 30. You can't measure 25, only 20 or 30. In between is a logarithmic scale. Pour to a line and glance in for the dot.
I'm gonna have to ponder that for a little while, I'm afraid. The lines between 20 and 30 are rather far apart. If the dot disappears exactly between them, why can't I call it 25?! Besides, I want to keep CYA as low as possible in order to keep chlorine as low as possible. My wife, who this is all for in the first place, is sensitive to the smells of the spa/hot tub.

I know that lower fc sounds like it would be more ideal but in reality when cya is lower & the maintenance fc is lower you risk it falling too low whilst soaking or during standby which actually make smells worse because of inadequate sanitation & Cc’s causing irritation.
Cya in the 30/40 range & its accompanying fc recommendations allows for an adequate buffer between you & zero in regards to fc.
The Cya buffers the harshness of the fc. So 3-5ppm fc with a cya of 20 is no different from 5-7ppm fc with a cya of 40 from an active chlorine perspective.
The only difference is that starting with 3ppm fc for instance, you risk fc falling too low before your next dose/end of soak whereas starting with say 6ppm this risk is greatly lessened.
The higher cya & recommended corresponding fc levels also make it a bit easier to maintain by not having to micromanage so much as you’re not always on the edge of “ok” so to speak in regards to the fc level. You can dose higher and let it ride.
