this is a thread that has been recombined and merged as one. for history, scroll down. there will likely be new questions in later posts. this one never got much of a response so I went with Rino.

rino/gorilla pads - question

is there a particular brand that folks recommend or has some new product come on the market in the last decade? not asking about foam boards or interlocking gym tiles, just the protector fabric type pads.

We can ask @kellyfair to get this started. Hopefully other AGP owners will reply soon. But I think in many cases it boils down to cost and availability between all of the pad choices (Rhino, Gorilla, insulation panels, etc).

my old intex was a gift from a good friend right after my father died in 2013. my friend would himself pass away the following January. he tricked me by asking questions about my recommendations for a pool that his landlord was going get. I told him get the biggest you can afford, bigger is actually easier to care for in many ways. previously I had a Sears "good" (as opposed to "better" and "best") 24 foot model that had been installed inside of an old 60 foot steel walled, concrete bottom stock tank. it was ruined by a microburst storm in 2006. that was a wild story for another time. here is how it looked in 2013 and one from 2020.DSCF0063.JPGDSCF0067.JPG20200325_104422.jpg

upon reciept of my new pool I started looking around the interwebs for advice on erecting it. that is how I found this website. husband is a masonry contractor so he has dealt with moving dirt and leveling things so he got the fun job. I did have to warn him not to use the material he shaved off to fill the low spots since that is actually ok in a lot of circumstances. I recall he was skeptical, but after we pulled the bottom up today I think he finally got it. that mantra to dig down, not fill is a tough one when the shovel is in your hand!DSCF0114.JPGDSCF0116.JPG

closed foam boards did not seem to be available so I used 1 inch insulation boards. never again.
at first I couldn't even get in using that flimsy ladder. my son had to do the wrinkle removal. slow fill from a well at about 6 gallons/minute finally got there.DSCF0118.JPGDSCF0120.JPGDSCF0122.JPGDSCF0128.JPGDSCF0132.JPGDSCF0146.JPG

did most of the dismantle yesterday but left the bottom layers thinking they might still be functional. knew the bottoms of legs were rusted off but had no idea what was happening inside the belly band!
there had always been this strange indention/tunnel at one side. you couldn't see it very well but sometimes the cleaner would hang up in it. I needed to pull part of that stuff up to see if we could somehow fill it in. that pretty much made the decision to clean it all up inevitable. no way to get it straight and flat and taped back together so up it goes. see the mylar imprint of the tunnel. also it is in the dirt photo. strange - half to a whole inch deep.

hmmm photos loaded in reverse, then seem fine in edit, then back to reverse order. 🤔 I'm not ept enough to figure that out.Resized_20240726_094408.jpegResized_20240726_094423.jpegResized_20240726_121828.jpegResized_20240728_100927.jpegResized_20240728_101215.jpegResized_20240728_101835.jpeg

QUESTION - what to do about the "tunnel" which is about 1/2 to one inch deep and fully compacted AND these other random holes that are of unknown origin or depth (and never noticed on bottom of full pool)? any ideas?

also, the block setting begins. with supervisor crew. :ROFLMAO:Resized_20240728_101835.jpegResized_20240728_101944.jpegResized_20240728_101954.jpegResized_20240728_142923.jpeg

QUESTION or OPINION please - probably going to reuse the cut off bottom of old pool in addition to new Rhino Pad. Which way should I do it? old liner with Rhino on top, or Rhino on dirt, old liner on top?

my concern is not roots or stuff growing, it is protection from small migrating sharp pebbles

blocks are in, just need to pick up some pebbles from the area. anybody have an opinion on underlayment?

well, I went with old bottom next to dirt and rhino pad on top. it is up and has just a little water in the bottom to keep the (nonexistent until you walk away) breeze from messing it up and I am waiting for son to help with bottom and first bit of fill/floor dewrinkling and leg adjusting. It was so hot today. I can't wait till it is full!!!! the fill continues! this was beginning around 3 PM and off at 9, about 6 hours of pumping. got just enough in before a little typhoon hit around 3:30. whew!

nobody seems too interested in this thread but another question/observation - does the return hole seem kind of deep/low in the water? I am trying to think why it would be a problem and not really seeing one but does anybody think I need to put the return fitting closer to the surface of the water?Resized_20240804_145700.jpegResized_20240804_172021.jpegResized_20240804_191544.jpegResized_20240804_194942.jpegResized_20240804_205341.jpegResized_20240805_071339.jpeg

You've just hit it at a time the folks who'd normally be a big help are busy elsewhere IRL. Those of us around are enjoying the progress, but sadly don't have many answers for you.

It can be aimed up to create surface movement just the same. Many of these don't come with skimmers so surface movement isnt even a thought. And as your video stated, they certainly don't want you cutting your own holes to add a skimmer/return.

The return is at about the same height as when I had my intex and it worked just fine. I wouldn't try and relocate it.

I'm good on lack of advice, mostly documenting in case it would be useful for others. I run about 50% of the time with the cleaner attached anyway. the old intex fitting (not the actual aimable return nozzle, but the part that it mounts to) had a grate over it that the cleaner attachment mounts to. the new one just has a hole. not a big deal I will figure it out. this time I am getting my skimmer in the right place directly across from the inlet, and more importantly facing into most of the summer breezes. swirling in circles isn't that effective for me.

oh it is definitely lower than my old Intex and I am putting my Hayward skimmer back on so no problem cutting holes in my brand new pool LOL.. if I decide to relocate the inlet it isn't a big deal. it was just kind of funny that I didn't notice that hole being so much lower than the old pool until this morning. it is almost as low as the old Intex suction hole, actually.
