if there wouldn't be the little issue with trying to get the pool clear and blue

We finally got to uncover the pool that came with the house we bought end of last year and found this

Not knowing any better we went to a pool store, got the water tested and recommendations on what to do.

This is how it looks now after about 10 days and throwing some $$$ of chemicals into it, brushing daily and backwashing the sand filter every other day...we think it looks a little better but is still far away from us being able to enjoy it

While researching what to do next I found this site and with all the hints and help available here, we hopefully will be able to enjoy our pool soon.

The TF-Pro test kit arrived today and next will be to SLAM...starting with some 10% liquid chlorine tonight since draining 40% of the pool isn't an option right now.

Hello everybody and any advise is welcome ;)

Sorry, you need to drain to reduce CYA. Search this site for the diluted CYA test to learn how much over 100 it is. You'd be wasting money adding chemicals you're going to have to drain anyway.

+1. Mix up a batch of 50/50 pool and tap water. Use that as your sample and procede with the rest of the test as normal.

Double the result.

CYA is lowered as an even % with 0 CYA fill water. A half drain lowers it half, etc etc. There is a huge difference between 110 and 180 for draining targets and if you don't drain enough the first time, subsequent drains remove good water with the bad.

There's also a no drain exchange. Read up about it below after getting us a diluted CYA test.

Thank you, I was hoping not to have to drain but if there is no way around it, I'll do it.

Just finished the diluted CYA test and came up with 100, couldn't see the black dot at the 50 mark.

Ok sweet. Getting the CYA down to 60 would reallllllllly help the slam you need. Doing so from 100 is obviously much more preferred than 200. :)

But yeah. 60 or less will help considerably. It's already going to be a full blown street brawl. No need to toss the other guy a knife to use against you.
