Pulled the cover off to a mess for the first time in a very long time. Pool floor was visible all the way to the deep end but after adding "shock" (Sams club Dichlor) pool has gone to zero visibility with the pump running for over 36 hours at this point.. The basic test kit I have shows a high level of chlorine and lower ph 6.8-7.0 for what that is worth. Can't test for CYA until I get my new TF-Pro kit hopefully Thursday or Friday. My question is what should I do at this point while awaiting test kit? I'm familiar with SLAM but asking for help so I don't just dump more money into chemicals. I have 16 gallons of LC ready to start but thought I should wait until I have further results. Thanks

Keep adding liquid chlorine to maintain 5ppm of chlorine until your test kit arrives. Post a full set of test results here if you need help. Otherwise, put your test results into Pool Math app and toggle the SLAM button on to get your correct SLAM chlorine amount for your cya.

Just got test TF-Pro. Here is what I have so far:

CYA 85 (I could still see a faint black dot until about 70 not sure if that is because I knew it was there)
FC 21
PH 7.4
TA 150? (Went clear around drop8 Turned to orange at roughly drop 10 but it was just a darker orange around drop 15 never really looked red to me)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I can do calcium if that is needed as well

Don't worry about TA or pH right now. Calcium in a vinyl liner pool is not super critical unless you have crazy fill water.
Your next step will SLAM. Ideally for a SLAM you want your CYA to be 30 or 40. On that dot test you can't interpret between the lines so round up. If you can see it 80 but not at 70, call it 80. If you can see the dot at 90 but not 80, call it 90. You should consider draining and replacing some of your water with that CYA level or doing a no drain exchange. It will save you save you time, money in chlorine, and hassle later.

We are getting new pool steps and have to drain at some point this season (when our pool place gets to us). That being said I would prefer to SLAM if that is at all feasible. I have a fairly large supply of LC and CalHypo (if that is acceptable) Secondly I have done the CYA test a few more times and have been closer to 50/60 if the measurement is truly based on not seeing the black dot. Is there a number I should be looking to get the FC up to assuming it can be done?? Also I have some Polyquat 60 that I did not use at the end of last year when I closed the pool (wish I had) can that be of any assistance?? I know it is more preventative but given my circumstances didn't know if that would be any help. Thanks again!

Use the attached CYA/Chlorine Ratio chart to figure out how much chlorine it takes to SLAM based on your current cya. Only use liquid chlorine.
Read more about SLAM procedure before starting.

Assuming 80 CYA, 3.3 gallons 10%. That will be your first dose. Following SLAM protocol, test multiple times per day and top up to 31 as needed. 3.3 gallons gets you 10 FC therefore 1/3 gallon gets you 1 FC for future top offs.
