Hi,
I am struggling with my combined chlorine this year since opening April 16, 2024. I have a chlorine pool 23,500 gallons - in ground with a sand filter with glass medium (new last season). My pool started out so cloudy I couldn't see the bottom. I SLAMmed my pool and the chlorine held steady around 15 and things slowly improved over about 5-6 days. It got to a point where I could see the main drain on the bottom but the pool water is still a touch cloudy and my combined won't go away. It hovers between 1.5-2ppm. I dumped more chlorine in and took the level up to 30ppm. Combined is still about 2.0. My pH now registers at 7.8. My CYA is almost non existent despite dumping a gallon of liquid stabilizer in about 3 days ago. I have not used any tablets this season. Not sure what other numbers you need to know. How do I get the combined to come down? I'm at a loss.

FC 30
CC 1.5-2
CYA - 5ish
pH 7.8
TA - 230 (this is higher than normal, not sure if accurate with Cl levels so high? )

Welcome to TFP! So it appears you aren't quite following the SLAM Process protocol. Your FC is not only high, but will feel exceptionally high to the skin and pool surfaces because you appear to have next to no CYA.

First question we have to confirm .... how are you testing your water? Which test kit specifically? Your signature is blank and we need to know to proceed.

Thank you - I am new to this forum! I have the signature added. No one is swimming yet- the pool is only 60 degrees. I am working on adding more CYA (but it takes a while). Initially I was advised not to by the pool store.
