This year will be the first opening with our pool with auto cover. Pool was built and filled right before the 2023 season.

For the winter, water was lowered 15 inches or so, all returns and skimmers were blown and plugged, and a winter mesh cover was installed. During the winter I had to remove water several times because of the rain we got. Putcthe pump in, drain, repeat.

I’m planning to open the pool in April, if not to use it, just to have something better to look at than the mesh cover.

Today the water is back to where it needs to be when the pool is open. Right in the middle of the skimmers opening.

I’m thinking about removing the winter mesh cover, swap to the autocover with the pump on top of it, until I restart the equipment in a month or so.

Any downside to do this? We don’t expect snow here anymore in coastal CT and it would prevent me to avoid pumping out water anymore and potentially have to refill with city water the day we want to open. Opinions???

Swap back to the autocover and if we happen to get any significant snow out of the blue, open the cover for the storm. I checked the other day and there was still a couple of cold spells in the 45 day forecast. (although it's laughable that they even try to guess that far).

Don’t even waste your time with a mesh cover. I’ve had an autocover 4 years now using it as my winter cover. We’ve had winter storms with 18 inches of snow then rainstorms right after and freezing on top zero issues.

I assume the rationale is that to use the autocover as a winter cover you need water at the waterline to support it. If water freezes at the waterline you might have cracked tiles. With the mesh cover you can keep the water lower and avoid this issue.

Would love to not mess with the mesh cover if I could.
