I have been trying to understand the HP demand for my 20 x 12 5000 gallon unground pool. If the water should turn over three times a day? Should I spend the extra money for a VSP 1.5? Or should I just get a .75 hp pump. I run a swg as well. I'm trying to do the most economical choice. I do like the idea of being able to just run all day. I do plan on staying in this house for awhile so long term savings is equal to short term savings for me. Bought the house and it was running a 2hp with a high and low switch above ground pump....but that burned out. Was able to still run swg on the low setting but had to put on high every once in awhile as the pump would loose prime if left on low too long.

"Turnover" is a pool store myth; it's not a thing. You need to run your pump long enough to provide satisfactory filtering, skimming, and if applicable, chlorine generation.

A VSP is a no-brainer no matter what, especially with a SWCG.

The industry picks a number for all the land. If they pick one high enough, it works for everyone.

You can have trees between you and your neighbor that always fill your pool while his is completely clean. It can literally vary that much between neighbors, much less across the land.

Then, whatever crud does blow in your yard will vary from more in the spring and fall and almost none mid season. Again, you might need 3 turnovers at times and other times .25.

If the pool water is polished, you can likely run the filter less. If it's lost its sparkle but is still properly balanced, you need more filter time.

I can't be bothered and run 24/7 on low RPM. It costs the same as 2.75(?) hours on high speed for me. Then it doesn't matter what falls when. 12+ hours is a long time for whatever drops in to get waterlogged and sink with the pump off. So I'm always skimming and filtering because it's cheap enough to not have to care.
