My husband passed away 9/26/23. I've been testing the Chlorine and PH like he taught me but we did not have but one chance to do the total chemistry tests. He told me to use the old math for pool testing and he told me to check it monthly which I haven't as I've been adjusting to my circumstances without him. Things are starting to settle down and I know I need to do this and learn about the pool. When I went to the chart I was lost. Here's my dilemma. I don't know what the TARGET values should be. I have a 10,800 gallon pool. Chlorine 5.5, CA 250, TA 50 and CYA 30 (I don't like that test as it seems really subjective.) I got on line and ordered Pool Care for Dummies and my goodness! I'm feel lost and I'm not a stupid person. I really want to do this myself and not hire a pool person. My husband didn't know a thing about pools and he taught himself (with the help of this forum) and I want to do that also. The only test I was unsure of was the CYA and I did my best. Can anyone help with the target values and then let me know what the other values are. Any ideas of where to start learning? The Pool book that I just got?
Thank you from The Mrs.

Hi there Mrs Ryker
When you use the older classic version of PoolMath (my preference too!) you first need to:

1) go to the bottom and specify that your pool is Plaster, that you want to take your advice from Troublefreepools, and lastly that you chlorinate using a salt system.
2)Make sure you also enter your pool's volume up top.

Then the program will show a suggested desirable range in and above the far left side squares where you will enter your own test results. These ranges are based on your pool type & how you chlorinate. The column on the far left is what you test NOW. The next column in allows you to hypothetically tweak your result and it will adjust the final CSI value.

3)Please read this: Pool Care Basics which will help you understand desired levels of each chemical value, and how some play off of others.

If you still have questions please holler back... winter is slow and we welcome helping folks around here :)

Hi Mrs Ryker, sorry for your loss and can't imagine what your going thru on all fronts. For the pool we can help you out. I'd recommend you try the poolmath 🧮 app which is today's technology and also can be shared so we can see your inputs once it's set up and being used.

Welcome back Mrs Ryker. I promised you last time and I meant it. We. Got. You.

Ask away, big or small. None of us knew nothin when we got here, and never forgot how bad it sucked. Folks show up everyday so that it sucks less for others. :)

The PoolMath app will be your best friend if you have a smart device (tablet/phone). I really recommend getting the subscription ($8/yr) so you can save all your log entries & we can easily see them.
With the poolmath app you do the tests & log your results first then click on each overview card to see what adjustments need to be made (if any). Your latest test results will then show automatically in the “current” space.
Although you don’t list ph Your other numbers look ok 👍🏻
the idea is that you want to keep fc in 🎯 range (or even a scootch higher is ok) & be sure it never falls below minimum.

Your signature says you have an ic40 salt system. Is it operational?
