Trying to get a handle on how much liquid chlorine to add daily? CYA is 50 (I think I am testing more accurately now after the helpful hints). According to this FC should be min 4 ppm, target 6-8 ppm.

6/19 I was perfect (8.5 pm). Had a weeks worth of rain and 6/24 was at 4 pm-added @ 2" liquid chlorine.
6/26 2.5 ppm, added rest of jug @ 3" liquid chlorine. 6/27 4.5 ppm. Jug says 13 ounces (10, 000 gallon pool) daily. Hard to estimate ounces from that big jug so I started trying to turn the ounces into mls. 13 ounces = 384 mls. Wanted it up a bit more so I added 400 mls 6/27. 6/28 still at 4.5 ppm.

Yes I know that the sun (has been cool for NC so far-getting hot now) is eating it up daily. My question is am I on the right track testing and adding daily until I get a hang of what my pool is using? And do you recommend I add these small amounts frequently or what-is this normal?

6/28 added 800 mls-figured it used my 400 mls yesterday so mI I doubled it today.

Thank you!

We use imperial measurements rather than metric. Wouldn’t it be easier to mark 3 lines on a 1 gallon jug? 64 oz is half a jug, 32 oz is 1/4 jug. 32 oz of 10% chlorine adds 2.5 ppm free chlorine to your pool. With UV from the sun, you could add half a jug, 64 oz every day. You’d be adding 5 ppm. Then work down from that if your testing shows you’re running above 8 ppm.

My issue with the jug is that it tapers off...I can't tell where half is -plus I'm a lab-rat so I'm used to measuring with lines-I guess in this case that isn't really necessary and I will know how much to pour at some point. The 32 ounces = 5 ppm helps..thank you!

I took an empty jug, measured water into it, and marked a 1x2 stick with a sharpie at each quart (that's the granularity I put in, could have been more). Now for each new jug I put the stick next to it and mark the jug. Close enough for pool work.

I'm a recovering lab rat myself.

I actually use a 2L nalgene bottle to measure.

I try to test and add daily. I have a solar cover that I put on at night and remove most mornings. Doing the chlorine test adds about 2 minutes to that process so sometimes I even test twice and then add accordingly. I tend to do pH every other day unless it has rained a ton or something else is going on.

If I know I won't be testing for a day or two I bump it up a bit high to give some wiggle room. Once you get a feel for your pool you'll develop a little intuition as to what it needs.

To be honest, adding liquid chlorine is not like baking a cake, perfect measurements are not needed.

If you are adding about 1/2 a gallon jug one day, empty the jug the second day,,,,, now you have added one gallon in two days. If your off 6-10 ounces one day, you make it up the next. There is no need to have a perfect 64 ounce addition each day.
