New sand in filter question.

Had sand changed in filter a little over two months ago and pressure gauge has only gone up 2 PSI from starting pressure. With old sand I was backwashing like every 10 days or so when gauge was 8 over starting pressure. Does new sand just take a long time to get dirty enough to backwash? Gauge appears to be working as usual, goes right back to zero when pump gets turned off. Thanks

Using skimmer socks? Our filter pressure never increases more than 1 psi all season.

With a properly sized filter and clean water, you may never have to backwash. I only do it once or twice a season just to lower the water level and get a free cleaning.

New sand does take a longer to clog enough to the raise pressure. But if my pool stays in check and is clear when I open it I may only backwash once a year or when I need to drop the water level from rain and when I close the pool. Also if the water is really bad I will vacuum to waste and just add water instead of filtering.

Generally the sand does not go bad, usually a deep cleaning will bring it back to like new. I have only replaced my sand with bought my house and redid the equipment pad and when I redid the patio around the pool. When the filter split I reused most of the sand. Digging out 300 lbs of wet sand is no fun, doing it once was enough to encourage me to maintain the pool using the BBB method chemicals and nothing else.
