Too much chlorine?

Hi! We started the TFP method just shy of 3 weeks ago. We had a pretty decent algae bloom (we have had the pool since September & had been using Leslie’s to balance the water), so started with a slam. I believe we did it correctly, and stopped doing the frequent checks/additions when it dropped less than 0.5 two nights in a row.

My question is: I am having to test/add about 10 cups of liquid chlorine every day. Is that at all normal? It has been very hot & very sunny these 3 weeks. My CYA was 35 to start, but I raised it to 50 to see if it would help. If that IS normal, that is great. But, if I go 1 day without adding chlorine my level drops to unreadable.

Any feedback/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I’m still learning!

(I think it will tag, but I have a 13,000 above ground pool & live just north of Houston, Tx)

Yes, that's normal. I'm adding the same amount of FC to my pool.

How are you testing?

Increasing the CYA to 50 will help.

Fill out your signature when you have a minute.

If u are concerned that something is brewing (which may be a possibility since your fc has dropped below minimum for your cya several times)
do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test.
If u pass —> Maintain at least the high fc target 🎯 for your cya FC/CYA Levels - this gives u more of a buffer for high uv days & heavy bather loads without risking going below minimum.
If u fail —> SLAM Process
Also try testing 30 minutes or so after u dose to confirm your liquid chlorine gives u the rise you’re expecting then adjust your dose if necessary. Bleach/liquid chlorine degrades in potency over time & with heat exposure.

What fc do you top it off at? My cya is at 40. I topped my fc at 10 about an hour before friends came over, then topped it off at 10 after they left.

I also find that during hot days with full sun, I need to add twice. Once around 1-2pm and then at night. Especially if I have a decent bather load.

80oz of 10% bleach is 4.8FC per day. That’s on the high side - should probably do an OCLT to check, but you’re in Texas so it may not be that unusual. This is the summer solstice and all.

Do you eat throughout the day? Yes? Because your body needs fuel to perform right? Pools need to "eat" too. And the more you use it, the more chlorine it'll go through trying to destroy the contaminants (urine, skin cells, dirt, dog dander, whatever the environment blows into it) introduced to it. On days it's not being used, you may lose as little as 3ppm FC. On other days you could lose up to 5ppm. The heavier the bather load, the more FC it's going to use. All told, pools will use FC daily and you need to add it or as I always liked to say, feed it. It's not broke. FC in a pool is a consumable product. It needs replenished.
