Can an ionizer be added to most hot tubs?

Hi all, new lurker here, learning about chemistry before we purchase our first hot tub. Have been looking at cedar tubs but also the Nordics which only offer an Ozonator upgrade, not an ionizer, and I'd rather have the latter. I stumbled on youtube showing how to add one but it is way beyond my abilities. Any advice? I know there's a lot I don't know still.

Welcome to TFP!

Ionizers are strongly discouraged. All they do is slowly introduce metal in to your water, which prevents algae but does not do any sanitation and can cause staining.

An ozonator can be helpful in a hot tub as a supplemental oxidizer to chlorine/bromine, but it is entirely optional. Maintaining adequate chlorine/bromine levels is required regardless of any other items installed to maintain a sanitary body of water.

Huh. So which of these options sounds better for a lightly-used tub (just one or two people, no kids, few times a week), using a dichlor, liquid bleach system?

Nordic PURE™ is a combination of ozone (O3) and UV-C technologies. This 2-step process has more sanitizing power, less hassle, and significantly reduces residual chlorine consumption to deliver the most advanced sanitation potential available.

Nordic CLEAN™ is an electronic advanced plasma gap ozonator. It converts oxygen to ozone, is more energy efficient than UV ozone generators and is lower in overall power consumption, heat generation and operating cost.

Totally agree with PineyVermont. Plus, Nordic makes a high quality product. We deal with many different manufacturers and Nordic is way up there as far as a company that really cares about you long after the sale.

I'm not real sure why you'd need supplemental oxidation for a lightly used tub. Don't buy in to the marketing, none of these changes the rules of caring for a hot tub.
