Hi there,
Setting up a new 20’ soft side pool with Intex sx3000 sand filter, but having a problem. I am attempting to backwash the new sand (white silica pool filter sand from Menards), but the filter just keeps shooting the sand out. I did think the sand was quite fine going in, but it appeared to be high quality. Pictures attached.

First make sure your MPV and hoses are correctly attached. Did you cover the main tube in the filter while adding the sand? If not that is the sand coming out. Do several cycles of backwash and rinse.

This are the specs:
  • Specifications:
    • Tank size: 16in (410mm)
    • Sand capacity: 120lb (55kg) #20 Silica
    • Glass media capacity: 85lb (38kg)
    • Pump motor: 0.75 HP
    • Turnover rate: 2,450 GPH (9.2 m3/hr)
    • Minimum pool size (water capacity): 5,500 gal (20.8m3)
    • Maximum pool size (water capacity): 19,600 gal (74.2m3)
The sand is 20/40 so probably the 40 size is too small. Its a small filter so go ahead and empty it and refill with 20 only silica.

I think you are correct. Frustrating to dump new sand and go drop $60 on a different sand again! Alas, at least it is only 3 bags, not 10+!
