Pool cover pump questions

Hello,

We had an automatic cover installed last fall. We will be leaving town for about a week. This spring when it rains I have moved the pump around on the cover to keep the water off. It looks like we should have rain when we are gone. Should I place the pump in the middle of the pool and not worry about it not being moved?

I must say I am a little nervous. Apparently we have a leak, and even though we had the pump on and it was working the cover couldn’t support all the rain and the cover caved in. Leak has not been fixed. Our pool company had us overfill pool at top of skimmer to support cover until it opens in April. I attached a picture for reference from when the cover caved in. It is not like that now. Just don’t want any more problems.

Any input as we are new to having the cover is appreciated!

Yes to fill pool up cuz you're destroying the cover if it's left as pictured. I'd recommend leave the cover open and you won't need a pump. Filling the pool is only a bandaid and water is needed to support the cover at its proper level which cannot last with a leak.

At times our cover pump has become clogged with pine needles and such and wouldn't suck. We've never had *that much* water build up, thankfully, but just checking the pump is a step you need to do.

I agree you should leave the cover open during your time away until this problem is solved.

It was so weird, the pump had been working fine, but because the pool water was so low somehow all the water on the cover ended up shifting to the shallow end and then help pump couldn’t keep up. Ugh. Pump is working fine now. I have seen on YouTube cleaning out the weep hole which we do from time to time.

As excited we were to get the autocover, it sure has been a learning curve. Just praying the leak is not super expensive to fix and they can figure out where it is coming from.

thank you!

Any amount of water on a pool cover is fine so long as the pool water level is high enough to support it (it's not safe for human/pet/wildlife due to drowning, but the cover won't break in any way). And conversely, any water on a pool cover gets too heavy quickly if there is no water to support it.

You've experienced the worst thing for a pool cover. Lack of water support. Hopefully your leak is easy to find and caused no other issues. Let us know how that goes.

Thank you For your input. Knock on wood, but so far pool has been holding water. I don’t understand what happened. Pool is now open so will be watching closely.

Is it possible that the cover pump was pulling water through the cover? This happens occasionally as there can be pinholes in the cover & the cover pump kinda sucks to the cover. If u never find your leak that’s something to keep an eye on- a simple solution is to put an upside down frisbee under the pump. With your cover being new you may want to inspect it while it is still in warranty.
