Right angle check valve for spa plumbing

Hello,
I had a pipe break at the check valve so I need to replace it. From the photo the red arrows are the water flow into the spa through a check valve. Can I put one of those right angle check valves in the circled spot? I see the jandy valve instructions say that water flow will need to be upward and not downward so the flap seals properly. Any insight is appreciated.

The instructions show that horizontal in with a vertical up out is ok and a horizontal in with a vertical down out is not ok, but the effect on the flapper is the same.

So, I disagree that vertical down out is wrong.

The flapper is held closed by the spring and the water pressure from the height difference in the spa water surface to the pool water surface.

Ideally, the flapper would open "UP", but it can open horizontally.
