Hi everyone, this is my first post on the boards as we are just in the early stages of our pool process. We live in the northeast area (about an hour outside of Philadelphia north west) and need to start picking out a pool color. I like the darker blue-grey colors but my wife thinks it will be too hot in the deep summer months. While I do agree that it may be a tad warmer, I would like to know from the board HOW MUCH warmer are we talking? Is it a few degrees or is it a drastic difference? My thought is it would be way easier and cheaper to cool down the pool in the case it is needed with a pool fountain or something similar than it would be to heat the pool with propane when that will be needed for sure on the shoulder months. Can someone help shed some light on this as at this point we are speculating. Thanks!

Mine is the darkest blue my pool builder offered. As far as the temp goes I've seen it argued that it makes little difference like a few degrees either way. I will say I have noticed my neighbors pool that is just white plaster does seem a little cooler than mine and we have pretty much the exact same sun exposure. It does hide dirt way better compared to my neighbors white plaster. IMG_0063.jpeg

Ours looks just like mcow’s above, with the exception of a deep end that appears darker. At the time, it was the 2nd darkest color offered. We really like it. I’ve added a chiller to keep my pool cool in the Texas heat, but I don’t know how much difference a lighter color would have made. Even though the pool is surrounded by trees, it still gets direct sun most of the day.

Also in Texas. We are going to be building a new pool at our new house we are moving to and I am seriously considering a chiller. Our water just get's so warm mid-late summer it stops feeling refreshing.

Thanks so much for your help. What exact color is that? I would love to look it up in our book to compare. I am sure in TX it is too hot but I wonder if in PA it would be perfect...
I don’t remember the exact name - it was 13 years ago. 🙂

I’ve been really happy with our Glacier chiller. Our pool would get to mid-90s by July 4 and no one enjoyed getting in after that. The warmest our pool hit this summer was 82 and I got it down to the mid-70s when the humidity would drop. Make sure you have plenty of space on your pad. The thing is huge! I had saved a pad from an AC replacement, as I knew I was going to get the chiller eventually.

Having said all that, the fan motor went out a couple of weeks ago, which is a little disappointing given that it’s only 5 years old. Granted, I run it every day for at least 15 hours during the summer, but I thought it would last longer than that. And Glacier wants $500 for a new one - only 1/4 HP! But it has a special mount, so I can’t just buy an off the shelf motor, at least I don’t think so. I plan to take it to a motor shop over the winter to see if they can rebuild it.

You are considerably farther north than I am. And we are on a different planet altogether from our cousins in Texas and Florida! You will NOT need to chill your pool, or need any such equipment. I have a solar heater and a dark pool and my pool rarely gets up above 90°, even during the crazy heatwave we just had. (To be fair, we get an ocean wind at night that cools the air down into the 60s, so that's a factor to consider.) I like it around 85. And it rarely gets warmer than that, way more often can't get there, even with the solar. I'm in Central, CA and have had a decent swim season this year, but it was only about 4 months long last year (I'm basing my swim season on days my water temps are 80+). I do believe the darker the pool the more heat it retains. I can use all the help I can get! So I'm recommending if you like a dark pool, that you not hesitate to have one based on a worry that your pool will get too warm. Not unless, of course, you like to swim in 70s water.

Sorry, I can't say how much actual temp difference there would be, only saying it won't matter. The more your pool can "warm itself" the better.

Darker colors will show their mottling more than lighter colors. I think all plaster-based finishes get some mottling over time. My first plaster finish had that. My three-year-old pebble is starting to show some mottling too. I like that effect, so that was a non-issue for me.

By the way, welcome to TFP! Glad you found us!!

I gotta agree with Dirk..... Go dark and get any additional warmth you can, earlier too one would hope. IF, and for your area that is probably a big "IF", you wanted to cool a pool down a few degrees a simple fountain such as you can see in my signature will do that for you.
Remember that if the daytime temp is 90, and the night time temp is 70, your water should average about 80. Using a cheap solar cover layer at night will help preserve water temp and evaporation also.

We just got ours, IMO I think a lighter color would show the light features better. Thurdays Pool Maya which is a beep blue. Reds really don't show up in light show mode.
Below is a picture of mine (on the right) and another before install. California on the left.

Below you see how reds really don't turn the pool red.

Nice pool
What color do you have ?

There's a pool color selection thread here on this forum. It might help.

Also check Wet Edge videos on You Tube. Not that I'm pushing their product - No. It's because they put these wonderful videos together so you get a feel for the completed project.
