What to put around the pool

In an attempt to keep our yard slightly neat looking in trying to figure out what to put around the pool? I understand it’s mostly recommended to leave it be but I’m hoping to find something to discourage a lot of grass/weeds but also not just plain dirt? I initially was thinking of planting hostas around it but saw that’s probably not a great idea, I’m nervous to do rock as I don’t want anything creeping under the liner and creating a hole.. I also have 3 dogs so I’m nervous about them jumping up onto the steel frame to nose around. Tips?

if you are worried about little pointy rocks, get bigger round ones. Golf balls instead of legos.

Use landscaping fabric under it and no weeds.

What was the problem with Hostas ? As long as they are 1ft+ away (when grown) it should be fine. The roots don’t travel to far in my experience and they generally grow downward. I have tons of Hostas and have split and moved them more times than I can count. I’ve yet to find one with sideways roots longer than a few inches.

The doggies...... nothing but a fence would discourage them. If they are outside while you are swimming, Most dogs would want to try to join you whether you are out of view in a shed or a pool. They probably won’t care much about the pool with no people in it.

I’ll plant hostas!! I’ll just have to make sure they are far enough away! I have one I can split, I just don’t want to screw this up in any way shape or form ?? yeah we’ll have to figure out something to keep the labradoodle from jumping up and trying to join the fun!

Do you have a traditional hard wall pool or an intex style pool? Whatever you put in make sure you add something to drain water away from the base of the pool. You don't want the base to sit in standing water after heavy rains or prolonged plant watering. Also make sure whatever you plant doesn't attract bees that will make it difficult to enjoy time by the pool.

This early in the year, One little sprig can grow into a 2 footer with enough water and sunshine. Break your one plant into as many bulbs as possible. Each grown plant has a point where you just aren’t going to untangle the roots anymore without damaging them. So if it’s 2 or 3 bulbs each, go with that, but try to gently shake them apart as best you can.

noted about the bees! I wouldn’t of thought that but did consider how buggy peonies are, my daughter is a freak about wasps/bees so if she sees one I’m afraid the pool will be ruined for her! We have a steel sided pool, I think my husband is going to do something to promote drainage along the sides away from the pool— we leveled the area but the rest of the yard has a visible slope. I’m nervous about keeping the pool level, fighting nature is always a struggle
