Four 80lb bags of plaster were left over by contractor and not used on job.

Is it normal to estimate that much over what you need?
. Bags are about $45 each totaling $180 . Is it normal that contractor take bags back and credit me back on balance I owe him ?
 
You don't say how big the job was, but in a fairly decent sized job, four bags isn't much of an overshoot. And that's one of those cases where "It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."

Since that's a special order item they usually won't take any back, but it wouldn't hurt to ask politely.
