Helping elderly friend

That's a shame they plan to get rid of the pool, it looks like it'll look really nice when you get it cleaned up. If this is it's last year, best to skip the SWG unless you plan to grab it and put it on your own pool before they destroy the pool.
Had I met him before he sold the house and land I would have bought it from him, but it's too late now. I will just do my best to get him through this year and anything after that we will worry about it if it comes up

Well bravo to you. Everyone needs a nice neighbor that's wanting and willing to help out. He's lucky.

Lemme know if you have any questions about Slamming his pool. Biggest thing with it is the more you keep FC up to shock level (but no more often than say 30 mins) the quicker the slam will be. As more time passes during the slam, you'll notice the FC falling slower and slower and you won't need to add bleach quite as much. Also, if you get the liquid shock from Walmart's pool isle, you won't need to add as much volume wise since it's 10% chlorine, vs regular bleach's typically 6% chlorine.

Thank you so much. I slammed my pool at the start of the season with the help of this forum so I'm sure I can do it again, but he lives in another town so I will do my best to keep up the FC

Get a bunch of bleach and head over. Start the SLAM and check the numbers for a couple of hours if you have the time to stay. Chart how much you need to add to keep the numbers up and have him add some more at the charted intervals since he will be there. Next chance you can get back run the tests again and see if the amount needed to add has gone down or stays the same.

I don't mean to sound mean by asking this, but at the age of 91, is he able to open a bottle of bleach? Those tops can be a pain to open. Is there someone around that could take care of bleach when you're not around?

Also, please make sure he understands that swimming with the water cloudy enough to have visibility problems is dangerous. I'm guessing he already knows that since you're helping him open his pool, but I just wanna put that out there just in case.

I wanted to follow up this post to thank everyone for the help. It took a while to get through the slam, but we did it. He was finally able to get in his pool.

What a heart-warming thread. Nice job. You are a good person. And what a shame to get rid of a pool. I mean, I get it... but I don't get it...

Too bad this association can't be influenced to leave the pool alone, for at least as long as your friends wants to use it. If he's losing a bit of his mobility now, that's only going to get worse, quickly, if he not able to swim. Bummer.

But you gave your friend another year with it, and that is pretty cool...
