South Alabama Swamp Slam

EIGHT MILE
No, it's not a frog gigging tournament. It's my pool. But I must say, if frogs are the goal, I would be in the running for first place!

So I've lurked on this site for awhile now. I even did a small SLAM last summer, but this is gonna be a doozie! So I will fill everyone in on where I am now and hopefully you guys can guide me into changing this South Alabama Swamp into a summer paradise.

I ordered a tf-100 kit last fall but I'm out of R-0013. Don't ask how I ran out so fast. Some may or may not have been spilled in the utility room. So I've ordered some more of it today. I know my FC is zero. PH is 7.5. I've been raking the debris out of the pool. So far I've gotten out 4 wheelbarrow loads of leaves, 3 big bull frogs and a box turtle. There is still a 12" snapping turtle in there. We've been playing cat and mouse (or turtle and net guy) for the last 2 days. I WILL catch him. So I'm just cleaning debris and waiting on tropical storm Alberto hit and bring my water level up. As soon as I get more CYA test agent, I'll post a full line of test results. I'm expecting it to be about 40-50.

I'm going to try to post some pics so all yall can see how epic this swamp is.

I haven't seen him today. I'm hoping he just crawled out and left. I'm wondering how he got in there. There's no ponds around anywhere. Who knows! I'm still scooping leaves and green bio goo. Hopefully my cya reagent will be here soon so I can get started on this SLAM.

Ok I got tired of waiting on the #13 to get here via mail so I just went bought some at the pool st... pool stttt... man I cant even say it. Anyways I got some #13. So my CYA is between 0 and 20. Closer to 0.

My question to you guys is this: Wouldnt it be smart to just slam with trichlor to begin with until my CYA comes up to 30-40 or so? Why buy liquid chlorine and cya separate when they are sold as 1? I know yall have been asked this before so I figure you got an opinion on it. I can monitor the cya level as I go in the beginning, right?

I pretty much got all the debris out. There's just green baby diaper poo and maybe a snapping turtle in there. I think...

Those pucks wont get FC or CYA up high enough to SLAM. Yes the trichlor will add cya but not at a rate fast enough to protect the level of FC from UV that you need for a SLAM.

1 puck will add approx .6 CYA per 10,000 gallons. Minimum is 30, so around 50 pucks for a 10,000 gallon pool.

Throwing darts at a tank kind of situation. If you are green, you need to overpower it and maintain that over powering until clean and clear.

I will get my CYA dissolving in the pool and my pH balanced, once pH is where I want it then I throw in 2-3 pucks in my floater and start maintaining FC with Liquid Chlorine.

I don't mind CYA of 40, but during SLAM I want to keep that low so I don't have to keep FC so high. If by the end it is closer to 40, perfect.

Ok I was thinking about using trichlor granules. Still a bad idea?

Hey Fun I also have a leaky valve I was hoping you could come fix...

Yeah I've been reading up on your thread. I feel your pain with the plumbing ordeal lol.

I agree. ^^ Use the granules for increasing the CYA at least to 30. Save the trichlor for later or slower increases as needed. Toss a scrub brush in the water and have that trained snapping turtle start scrubbing the bottom for you. :)
Adding CYA:
To increase CYA via granular stabilizer, place the required amount as calculated by the Poolmath calculator into a white sock and place in the poolside skimmer basket. For those concerned about suction flow to the pump, suspending the sock near a return jet or from a floating device will also suffice. Best never to allow undissolved granules to rest directly against the pool surface. Squeeze the sock periodically to help it dissipate. Once dissolved, consider your CYA adjusted to that programmed (target) level. CYA test readings should show a rise in 24-48 hours, however some pools may experience a longer delay to fully register. Best to confirm final CYA in about 5-7 days before adding any more stabilizer/conditioner.

Haha, IF I could fix both of our problems ... I can assure you I would!! lol :super:

Btw, where in South Alabama? I have family down in Dothan.

Did you get the snapping turtle out? If not, can you see well enough to know if he’s still in there? I gotta see this turtle.

This is too funny and too ironic. I ordered the R-0013 CYA reagent and mine arrived yesterday too. As I was getting out of my car yesterday near my storm drain, just before I grabbed my Amazon box of reagents I saw this guy. Huge box turtle I think.

I guess the snapping turtle crawled out of the pool while we were gone. Or he is still in there and I just cant see him. I havent seen him in a few days though.

As far as the slam goes, I'm going through the bleach like a champ! Keeping the FC up to shock level and backwashing and scrubbing. I added some bleach last week before I got my #13 just to get a jump on it, but I really didnt start till Saturday. I'm going to attempt to post pics of it...20180527_185606.jpg20180602_082638.jpg20180603_084305.jpg20180604_064932.jpg20180605_063607.jpg
