CYA requirements

Hello,
New member here in NORCAL. Have gone through 2 pool service providers after the tech's were not doing their jobs and sometimes not even bothering to open the cover. I told them I have motion activated cameras before they started. Oh well. I have a 18,000 gallon gunite pool that is covered 95% of the time. If I'm not swimming I close the cover to keep out debris and minimize evaporation. I ordered my TF100 and have been checking everyday for the last 2 week. All seems to be good. My CYA levels are really low <10. My FC is a steady 5 even with the Pentair Rainbow 300 Automatic feeder set on it's lowest setting of "1" using 3" pucks. PH has been steady at 7.5-7.8

1. With the water seeing little to no sunlight is it OK to not add conditioner to bring up the CYA level?

2. Does the UV from the Paramount UV Sanitizer degrade FC like the sun?

3. Pool looks clear as seen in the pics. Water temp is finally getting above 70 so should start swimming next week when it gets up to 75-80. The pool is only used 5 months out of the year May-Sept due to low water temps the other 7 months and me not wanting to pay for Propane which is currently $3.25. Ouch!

Current setup is a Pentair Easy Touch Control System, Pentair Intelliflo 3HP pump, Pentair Clean & Clear Plus 420 4 cartridge filter, Paramount Ultra UV Sanitizer, Pentair Rainbow 300 automatic feeder. 10 solar panels.

Thanks in advance!

1. You need CYA to act as a chlorine buffer or else the active chlorine levels will get too high and your water will be very harsh. CYA protects chlorine from UV loss but it also buffers the chlorine to reduce its harshness. You should maintain a minimum CYA of 30ppm.

2. Yes, your UV sanitizer produces UV-C radiation which reacts with chlorine and destroys it (reduces it to chloride).

Your tablet feeder will build up CYA in the water. For every 10ppm FC added with trichlor, you will increase your CYA by 6ppm. You should open your pool cover up a few times per week just to let the water get some additional UV and help offgas any CCs that might build up. Just an hour or two per week should be fine.
