Hello all,

So, like many others posting here, having just moved house I now find myself in possession of a pool with no idea what to do with it! I've spent the last few days avidly reading up many of the articles and beginners guides and investigating what setup I've got in order to formulate a plan.

So, let me run through my setup, what I plan to do with it, and perhaps you guys can let me know if I'm on the right track!

Starting with a few pictures:

Apparently the pool is in working order and was last used two years ago.

The pool is in ground, fibreglass construction (fibreglassed in-situ), approx 12x30foot and 14K gallon (US). I'm thinking at this point to use a vinyl liner to line the pool - with felt lining between the fibreglass and liner to prevent the rough finish of the fibreglass showing through. As I have small children, I will also build wedding cake steps or similar in the shallow end (3ft) to enable them to be in the water but not straight out their depth, and liner over the top. All the paving and pool coping will be redone.

The current pump room is to be re-located and I plan to re-use the Starite pump (not confirmed power but I assume it should be ~0.75HP) and Tagelus sand filter, but will remove the heat exchanger (fed from the domestic gas boiler) and replace with a heat pump. I think this needs to be around 70,000 BTU (22KW) and am looking at the Calorex PPT22ALX.

The big dilemma I currently have is on the covers. Given this is the UK, and typically not that warm, any free heat I can get from a good solar cover would be very beneficial, but I also have safety concerns with small children. The area is fenced/walled and this could be improved with a glass balustrade ontop of the wall, but this probably isn't all that robust as the kids get older and will be able to climb easily, and the close location to the house, which brings me back to the safety covers!

When the time comes to fill (domestic water supply), I'll make sure I have my test kit on hand and test the supply before fill commences so I know how much of what I need to be adding!

Anyway, I'd appreciate any thoughts on comments on my plan, and I'll keep you posted periodically how I'm getting on!

Thanks
