Hi,

So I'm going to probably add in a salt cell myself as the quotes I'm getting are silly, my only real question other than flipping between brands is where to fit it....

Whoever had the pool built seems to have crammed all the equipment so close together... I was thinking maybe the diagonal pipe running up that comes out the heater? Any advice would be welcome. If I remember correctly the right hand side at the back is to/from the pool and the left is to/from the spa.

If I have to move stuff, the only thing I could move would be the filter on the left, that could be moved further left, the heater is as far right as it can go.

It needs to be after the heater. If that pipe isn't long enough, then you can add a piece of pipe going up, and then back down to the original pipe. Depending on the brand you buy, some sell a 'vertical install kit, but that's something you can make yourself if so inclined.

Thanks guys, had not thought about over chlorinating the spa, I was reading the Pentair IC40 directions (not that I decided on that yet) and it said to put the cell before the 3-way valve if using a spa/pool combo guess I need to make sure that if its in spa mode the cell does not run.

We moved in 8 months ago, can't take credit for the pool design, but the noodles were all me lol... the shallow end is great for our 16 month old, she can splash around in that area and the water does not go above her chin. After the noodles there is a really steep slope down to >8'

I would put it on the outlet pipe of the heater. It will need to be vertical so some new pipe work will need to be done. It might need to extend as high or higher than the return plumbing is now and then come back down and be joined back in before the automated valve for the pool or spa return.

You should be able to go with a Jandy Aquapure SWG and have the automation control the output while in pool or spa mode. When in spa mode make sure the automation sets it to 0%.

Thanks ping, That's what I think I will do, my only hesitation is that my local pool company said the Jandy Aquapure SWG was junk, and want to fit a Hayward t15, that would mean loosing the automation, I can't really find a subjective review of the SWG units.

The Jandy SWG's were having major issues with the tri-sensor, but with the latest design of sensor the majority of issues Jandy was having have been solved. I wouldn't hesitate to put one in now if it came with the newest sensor. If a place has old inventory they might try to sell it with the old sensor design and I would go somewhere else to buy it.

They don't have to, just a thought.

Looking at it again, they could also run the pipe out of the heater towards the front of the picture, up and then back to the return valve keeping all 90 degree turns. The cell would be mounted on the run that is the length of the heater.

Right that settles it then, thanks guys. I just got my test kit, I had a feeling the CYA was very high and it is got no where near the 100 mark before the dot vanished, time to fire the pool company, throw the pucks away, add a SWG and do it myself :)

Ok, 2 more questions now I have my new Aquapure/Aqualink cabinet and 1400 cell

1). In the 1400 cell manual it shows 3 different positions that the 3 port cell can be orientated in, none of them have the water flow going up... as my output from my heater is close to the ground I was going to have the flow up from the heater through the cell... Has anyone done this, or does anyone know a reason why it should not be done? Basically I want to invert the diagram circled in red:

2). Given that the cell has a temp sensor on it, do I still use the one that is connected to the iAqualink? or does the iAqualink use the one from the cell now? I ask as I'm probably going to have to replace the pipe with the external sensor in it, so would rather not drill a new hole if I don't have to.

As always thanks for the help!!

Joby

It's ok to switch the direction of the cell and I always switch mine around every time I inspect the cell. The only position required is the sensor should be on the downward side if the cell is mounted horizontally which is not what you are planning to do.

I'm not sure on the temp sensor for the iAqualink. My guess is yes as the iAqualink might use that temp to control the heater functions. If no one responds here, call Jandy tech support or the place you bought the SWG from.

Why does it need to be vertical?

The Pentair IntelliChlor manual states "install vertically for best performance". The manual for the newer Pentair "iChlor" SWCG states the same thing. I haven't been able to figure out why these would work better vertically.....

I've called Pentair tech support twice but never get a sensible answer, they seem to not know why the manual states that:confused:

Well, the only thing I can think of (educated guess) is that the plates get more even coverage that way, possibly, under certain circumstances?

It could be that they don't want the Hydrogen gas to collect inside the tube. But if they put that reason down, visions of the Hindenburg might scare people off. Or it could be that if your filter leaks, any stray sand or DE will fall out rather than collect on the plates when the pump is off. Pure conjecture on my part.
