Lid removed, hose in, and water gets pulled towards filter. I am guessing we are leaning back to a clog between the skimmer and pump, then? - - - Updated - - - I have now tried this in "waste", "recirculate", and "filter"...all with the same outcome :(

The basket is trapezoid in shape and can only go in one way... The incoming water comes in just above the basket (to left in the video), and the outgoing water hole can't be seen when the basket is in (but would exit to the right in the video).
