An update: I did try to unscrew the fitting that is at the bottom of the skimmer - applied a decent amount of force - but could not get it to budge. It must be glued. I am thinking of detaching the skimmer from the pool - and maybe once the skimmer is off, I can try to unscrew the fitting - or...
