As others mentioned, having a proper test kit is key! I keep the pump running as long as you're shocking and definitely while you're adding stabilizer - try not to backwash otherwise the stabilizer might be wasted and you'll need to test more. So clean /backwash before you start the shocking...

Gotcha, so basically the higher the CYA the less effective chlorine becomes (thus needing more of it to shock). I feel relieved cuz I was really worried about damaging the equipment after dumping so much chlorine in there. BTW, thanks Rob for the quick and patient response!

I replaced my liner last year because it was leaking. I did not care how low the water level was because the liner was going to be replaced. I think it isn't "safe" to lower the water level for liner pools because if its not underwater it gets hit by the sun and can stretch or damage the liner...

politely bumping... For the pump basket, I picked up a tube of Jack's 327 lube for the O ring. I shall see how that works out. But I would still like to know how I should go about tackling the leak around the pipe thread connection...
