I think part of it is that the higher chlorine will actually breakdown the dead algae therefore helping with the clearing process as well as some getting filtered out.

Can you post a pic of the vac? Also see if either if the holes in the siimmer has more suction

Yes New grids will fix it. I had the same problem but once i replaced the grids I have had no issues. If you inspect the grids you may notice areas where the plastic frames are broken

For a non swg pool keeping it at 80 is really high and doesn't give you much would room. Also increases chlorine needs to maintain a clear pool. What test kit are you using? I would recommend draining to get cya to 40
