Sent the unit back to the Maytronics service center- 2 days and $50 to Fedex from CA to AZ. They dropped a new motor in it and shipped out the same day it was received. Two days after that it was back in the pool and working normally.

Yes, the impeller and directional pivot both move by hand. The unit moves in the start up routine, so as others have suggested, probably some motor issue. Waiting to hear back from Maytonics.
