Thanks, Guys. I picked up the DE from a local pool store and brought in a water sample too. Their numbers differed from mine on a few areas. Most notably they listed the CYA at 13, while my test this morning had it at 50. How much faith do you put in the computerized testing done by pool shops?

With the end of the swimming season approaching, I was wondering if we need to clean the cover before installing it this year? Is there enough baquacil residue to cause any difficulties when we open the pool next spring?

Okay, so I backwashed the filter and there was a lot of baqua-goo in there. Back washed it again this morning and it looked clear for the entire three minutes I backwashed. Lost about five ppm of chlorine over night; I'm skeptical that I'll ever get to the point where I lose only 1 ppm...

Yes, that's right. An additional 34 drops. I haven't backwashed because the pressure hasn't budged since I changed the sand last Saturday. It certainly couldn't hurt, so I'll give that a try. :-D
