I had a similar problem with my Hayward skimmer. I just quit using it thinking it was broken and not repairable. Come to find out the ring that the basket sits in is not molded into the assembly and is easily replaceable. I found one in my local Leslie's store for about $10.

Thanks duraleigh. It is concrete, I'm certain of that. I built the pool myself, but hired a local pool contractor to do the bottom for me. He recommended the concrete. He did a good job with the possible exception of the slopes. It was a hot day, and the slope mix was dryer, so it set up...

I built my in ground 18 x 26 vinyl liner pool in 2004. I bought a kit online from PolarPools. I’m planning on replacing the liner in a week or two, and I’m curious if I should upgrade the main drain at that time. The pool bottom is concrete, so a wholesale change out isn’t likely practical...
