Hello Jim - Good point. I was going to add that I'm also upgrading the return line to 2" and then ask whether the ball valve could be a good choice for keeping water from flowing back to the down hill pump. I think you've answered the question Thank you for sharing your experience!

Jim - The pump lid will be opened now and then, for sure. Had overlooked that. Thank you for your helpful and practical reply. Regarding the valve to use, would this be a good situation for a high quality ball valve (2" full port/true union)? I have a spare. Or just use another Jandy style...
