Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

I have done this previously, however the place where I bought a big bag of boric acid from no longer supply it. I see from your sig that you're based in Melbourne. Can you suggest where to get boric acid?

Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

But if I lower the pH to achieve the same CSI I push the equilibrium reaction away from CO32-. Making the probably of Ca2+ finding CO32- the same. My only thought is that at a lower pH we are closer to the pKa of carbonic acid, and therefore more buffering to bicarbonate would occur in the SWG...

Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

CSI describes the propensity of calcium carbonate to move from aqueous to solid (+) or solid to aqueous (-). The CSI in the pool itself is similar now to before, however, I have no flakes forming in the SWG. Therefore reducing the TA must reduce the (+) change in CSI that occurs in the SWG when...

Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

Aquarium bubbler worked, but it was slow. I got concerned exposing the rest of the pool to a significantly negative CSI for longer than necessary. It would also be counterproductive to the goal of lowering HCO3- if any CaCO3 were leached from the pool surface as it would increase HCO3 again...

Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

Thanks for the link. I didn't find it when reading through the pool school stuff again before posting. I've ordered a large aquarium bubbler. We'll see how we go.

Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

I'm trying to get the TA down and I'll report back. Kids splashing are quite an effective way of aerating a pool it seems.

Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

Thank you. No, I don't add water often and salt and calcium levels are stable. I don't think it's dilution.

Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

4 or 5 years. It's a generic replacement of the original. I've been cleaning it with double strength vinegar. Cleaning does not seem to change anything with the flakes. Reagents new in Oct 2023. Yes, still using clear choice labs. Your original reading was the intent if not the content of my...

Lots of flakes from SWG and falling CYA

Not sure if this post should be here or in the advanced topics section. My apologies if this is the wrong place. Mods please move. Over the last year or so my SWG is making more and more flakes of scale and I cannot work out why. My CSI has always between -0.2 and -0.3 until recently where I've...

CYA dropped massively at end of SLAM - Halp!

I took the kids to a wave pool yesterday and really noticed that I needed goggles whereas I can swim with my eyes open in our TFP pool for an hour or so without sore eyes. Noted the chlorine smell too. Your pool looks awesome. Congrats on getting it back to looking so great.

CYA dropped massively at end of SLAM - Halp!

I like this. I got into the TFP method from when we first had a pool and have not used them for anything except measuring borate.

CYA dropped massively at end of SLAM - Halp!

I have found my SWG very helpful at this stage of a SLAM. I only needed to add bleach for the first 2 days then the chlorine from the SWG was more than enough. It made it much easier to avoid chlorine falling too low when I read unable to tend to the pool. I know that opinions vary regarding...

CYA dropped massively at end of SLAM - Halp!

I've had the same low reading problem using clear choice labs CYA reagent, although I was reading very low for both the pool and the reference standard. I'm not sure what fixed the problem, it was one of: * Repeating test ? Lighting * Rinsing everything very well * Shaking CYA reagent (not sure...
