    CYA keeps dropping...

With the question having been raised about a pool leak, I looked up a way to attempt to see if there was one. The test I found and decided to use said to put a bucket, or plastic bin, into the pool on a step. Fill it with water so that the water level was the same in as out and wait 24 hours...

    CYA keeps dropping...

There is no autofill. I don't feel like I add that much water, either (about 1" of water each week). The last full set of tests was from back on 4/26: FC=7.5, CC=0, pH=7.5, TA=110, CH=375, CYA=60, Salt 3100, Temp 83, CSI=-.04. I've been watching and testing the FC and pH and keeping them in...

    CYA keeps dropping...

Ok, I have no idea what is going on, but something in my pool is eating CYA for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Here's the full story for my pool. I purchased and moved into the house Dec 1, 2014 (6 months ago). This is the first pool I have owned, so I had no clue what I was doing, what...

    Is it algae?

Ok, while I was in the pool with the kids, I had an opportunity to find a spot I had not yet brushed. I wiped it with my hand and it felt gritty, not slimy at all. I'm now convinced it was not algae, but instead just debris...

    Is it algae?

Ok, As I think through the water movement in the pool, the bottom clean outs would keep the bottom stirred up a bit, but there is nothing that really hits these areas so it would make sense that that is where stuff would accumulate. Like I said, the pool is crystal clear, has no, or very minor...

    Is it algae?

I hope it's not a problem to resurrect this thread, but I have some more questions. I added 4lbs of CYA and my CYA was into the low 60s. I have added about 1 lb more and am waiting a couple more days to make sure the level is stabilized and hope to see it either in the low high 60s to low 70s...

    Is it algae?

Ok, well, I guess I'm done with the SLAM. I set the system back to it's programmed run time and let it shut off last night. When I tested last night (around 9:45 PM) the FC came in at 23.5 (47 drops). This morning, as the sky was showing some light, but the sun not yet up (around 7:15 AM)...

    Is it algae?

So, since the water is clear, and the CC is < .5, I should run the OCLT and if that passes there is no need to worry about the stuff on the steps? Since it sounds like that is the case, I'll run the OCLT tonight and report back tomorrow morning. I was just double checking to make sure I was...

    Is it algae?

Hey woodyp, I realize I cannot do the OCLT with the SWG running. And I realize my CYA is low for the SWG (I tried to get that across in the first post but must not have succeeded). I don't want to raise the CYA nor run the OCLT until I have a better idea that I'm done with the SLAM...

    Is it algae?

Ok, I've learned some lessons, and this whole pool thing definitely reinforces the whole "the more I learn, the more I realize there is to learn, and the less I feel like I know" idea. About 3 weeks ago I purchased a pool blanket. I cut it to shape, then cut it into pieces to make it easier...

    Adjusting return jets...

Yup, I set the jets to counter clockwise and was able to watch some debris move around on the surface and end up in the skimmer in about 4 minutes time...which is two cycles through the return system...

    Adjusting return jets...

so, you would not have water circulating through the spa except when we are out there? I tied to balance out the spa drain along with the input into the spa so that water would still circulate, but it is nearly impossible to balance out.

    Adjusting return jets...

Ok, it sounds like there are some general rules (use the jets to get good water movement away from the skimmer barely rippling the water surface, but create a rotation so that the old water gets pushed by the skimmer). Sounds well and good, but then I look in my pool and wonder exactly how do I...
