Patience!

I can barely see the top step. Look at the last picture. I couldn't even see the dead frogs in the bottom of the skimmer this morning. lol
I don't see how any metals could have got in. The only thing I have added is bleach and buffer. Our water is from a well. I have a reef tank so if there was metals in the water my corals and fish would have died by now.

Ron, Have those steps been in the pool all winter? I would suggest that if they have been, that you remove them ASAP and clean the garbage up underneath them!

We took the steps out and cleaned them. We put them back in so that we could brush the floor and wall everyday.

Our well water was checked by a lab when we had the well dug. Once again metals would have killed all my corals and fish.

I would be at a loss of words atm.....looking through this post I see you've used over 45 gallons of bleach, lost .5 fc in three hours and lost 2 fc over 12 hours....and I don't see a difference in water either.

Just throwing some things out there...

1.) How much chlorine do you lose over night?
2.) Maybe time for a new CYA test
3.) What's status of your filter? Change in pressure? Cartridges getting cleaned, and inspected?

Are you sure you have the bottom all cleaned out? No big piles of leaves, dead animals (it happens) etc down there? I'm shocked to see it's not clearing at all from the pics. You should see something by now with those #'s.

I have been on this forum since 2009. I have not posted much but I have read a ton. With all the knowledge that I gained from this site I have always been able to maintain my pool. I have had algae before--always my fault. But I have always been able to slam and recover. But this time.......I'm at a loss.

Like I have said we vac and brush daily. I brush from inside the pool and cannot feel or find anything in the pool. We removed the steps and cleaned them with bleach. We have used 57 gallons of bleach so far. And the pool looks the same as before we started. I lost 5 fc in the last 24 hours. My filters are no longer getting dirty. This morning my pressure gauge was up by 2. I changed filter cartridges anyhow. After 12 hours my pressure has not even risen 1. I know the pump and filter are working. You can see the flow, and the filter is catching algae and turning green. Once again I'm at a loss.

I have not checked cya in a week because I thought the test would be off while shocking. I lost 2fc over night last night.

The centrifugal switch being bad is the same conclusion I have came to as well. But I have never taking a motor apart and didn't want to risk it being down for a long period of time with all that chlorine in the pool.

What should I do?

First thought would be to test CYA again, just in case there's a surprise, although I don't really think that is the problem.

Second thought would be to work out with the experts (ie not me ;)) what a good first step would be if you *did* have a metal problem -- this really is starting to smell like an almost-completed SLAM *plus* some metals in the water (AFAIK algaecide is the most common source) that reacted with the high chlorine levels.

I guess there are two options but I don't know which would be best :

- add some kind of sequestrant (easy and would show quick results, but more $$ to pour in the pool)

- take the FC level down enough that the colour change from the metals reacting with high FC is reversed (don't know if it works like that, or whether the FC level required to reverse the colour change is also low enough to put your SLAM at risk)

Draining & refilling is obviously a third option but there's no way I would do that at this point -- it feels as if you're through the worst and there's something stupid left to deal with... we just need to figure out what it is.

Slamming will not throw off the CYA test. I read back and you added CYA when you opened the pool since you had a 0 reading. If you did not close with 0 CYA then you have had the bacterial conversion that was brought up earlier. Go ahead and re-test the CYA and post the results. The CYA you added may also have been consumed. If the CYA is zero or very low go to your local pet supply and buy an ammonia test. It will be located with the aquarium supplies. They are inexpensive and it will tell you if there is ammonia present in the pool. If you have ammonia, it will take a lot of bleach to clear it up before it can make a dent in the algae.

Also I would pull out the ladder and scrub it down. Ladders have all kinds of nooks and crannies for algae to live in a semi-protected environment since most of us do not have good circulation behind the steps.

Cya = 50
The ladder is NOT in the pool!!!!!!!!!!! I have posted 4 times that the ladder has been removed and cleaned. We put it back in to get in the pool and brush. We take it back out afterwards.
I tested for ammonia with an aquarium ammonia test kit and got 0.
We have always used the BBB method and have never added algaecide or anything of that type.
Only bleach, baking soda, borax, muratic acid, and buffer.

I only lost 1fc overnight. cc is up to 3.5 though.

I would try raising FC to your "Mustard Algae Shock Level" (35ppm was posted earlier in this thread) for a couple days and see what that does. Just don't get in the pool while the FC is that high! :)

I'm actually thinking about going the opposite route. I only lost 1 ppm fc over night last night. I only lost 5 fc the last 24 hours. That's pretty close to a normal day. My filter was clean when I went to clean it tonight. There is no algae on the walls or floor. So If I lose 1 fc tonight I think I'm going to let it fall to normal range. Recheck my other parameters and see what happens. I'm also trying to find a pool store that can check for metals.
The pool is great besides the color. No slime on the wall or floor. No smell from cc's. If I was color blind I would be happy lol.

Laughing at the color blind bit... but hey... How about an OCLT to see what you're losing and if it's none, I would say it's got to be metals and you need a sequesterant.

LOL Well it sounds funny but the water felt good. That make any sense? I have no idea how metal would get into the pool but.....It's just gotta be something else. If it was algae it would have changed shades of green by now. The filter would be get clogged up with it. The floor and walls would be at least a little slimy. I have none of that...just green.
