Modern Coping Ideas Please!

Planning out some choices now considering how long it can take me to decide on things! :unsure: I am looking for a more modern look for coping, White/Gray colors and square-ish edges. I know there are a lot of choices out there, what are some that will:
  • not be slippery
  • look awesome
  • not get too hot
  • not snag a bathing suit
I will probably sit on the edge quite a bit and don't wanna burn my butt 🔥!

The saltwater pool will be a rectangle shape and I live in Texas. The pool will be in full sun from 11am-8pm. 🥵 Oh, and also if you know what the price level of the material is that would help too! Pictures are a plus!!!

**If you know some I should stay away from please mention that too!**

Watching this one as well. We’re in Katy and should be breaking ground next week. Similar scenario...full sun from 10am-sunset. Planning on travertine unless there is something ‘cooler’.
 
Same here...im in AZ and if I can do everything I want to do to the backyard, it will be in direct summer sun from 9am-3pm and then shade. I have a 4yr old and almost 1yr old so there will be plenty us usage over the next several years and I want to make sure it'll hold up and be almost no maintenance. I'm think concrete 16" around with turf but I'm still in the planning/funding stages.
 
Concrete gets the hottest of all in your climates whether just cantilever slab or precast coping. Natural stone is a little better in lighter colors. They have newer outdoor pavers that are like tile but thicker, and are the new hot thing coming around. Been in commercial space for a while now hitting residential and patios too. They make bullnose coping pieces for many of them

So we did the ivory travertine coping and its been 100 plus almost every day here the past couple of week in DFW.....I will say it does get hot still. Dont think because its light it will be cool...look at the beach sand...still gets blazing hot. I will say for the travertine though...it cools off fast. So once the shade hits it, it does not retain heat very long at all. No snags that I know of so thats not an issue unless you got some jagged saw cuts. Overall we love it. Its really only slippery when you have flip flops on but with bare feet I find it totally fine. Just giving you my 2c. Good luck in your build!

Interesting, we also have the Ivory Travertine are just a few mines from you, think it does awesome in the heat. We walk on it all the time barefoot and its not uncomfortable at all and no way I would call it "blazing hot".

I also added a pathway through the grass to the equipment pad and gate using just cheap cement stepping stones and those get hot and I end up dancing or just walking on the grass. And I would not dare walk barefoot on the concrete driveway.

We’re in AZ and went with travertine for coping and deck. Full sun from 9am and has gotten up to 113 so far this summer. the travertine used for the coping is light and does get hot, but I can touch it, walk to get flip flops I’ve left on the other side and sit on the edge, especially after coming out of the pool. White would have been even cooler but it did look very modern when we went to look at them. We chose silver for the deck area and that has quite a bit of variation. There is a noticeable difference in temperature between the coping and the deck which has more of the darker tones. Depending on the size and style it can fit a modern design.

Marbella stone was the coolest but the price point made us opt for travertine and flip flops. 😀

I agree it doesnt get hot as beach sand and its walkable but sitting on it in the full sun if you are dry...its pretty warm. If you are in a bathing suit its totally fine. I walked on a neighbors pool with belgard pavers in full 100 Texas sun as well and its way cooler than that.....definitely not trying to scare you away!
 
We are using 3 foot by 3 foot thermal bluestone for our coping and patio - we won’t have a separate coping. Is a very modern look.
 
You may also want to consider tumbled marble coping. I saw someone posted their marble coping and decking in a facebook group recently and it looked gorgeous. Modern yet timeless. I may be biased though, we are obsessed with marble...have it all over our home for counters, bathroom floors, etc. :)

We looked into it for our 1000 sq ft of decking, but the cost from our builder was astronomical.

ours is "artistic paver - ivory shellock" - slightly rounded but not like old school looking rounded - and the copings are 8"x16" so they look cool IMO
