I've never owned a pool before and I'm looking to have an 18'x52" above ground pool installed. I was debating between a 21' and 18' but I'd like to save some yard space.

Anyways, I'm trying to compare prices on equipment between my local shops and online. My local shop/installers want to install either a 1 HP or 1.5 HP pump and 150 lbs or 175 lbs sand filter.

However, it seems like they are overcharging me on the equipment?

My first step is determining what equipment I actually need:

  • Pump
    • 1 HP vs 1.5 HP for 18'x52" pool
    • Hayward PowerFlow Matrix vs LX
    • Single-speed pump vs Dual-speed
    • Twist lock required or recommended?
  • Filter
    • Hayward S180T seems recommended by my shops and installer
    • Is 150 lbs enough or do I need 175 lbs?
    • Should I buy the Hayward pump+filter kits?

Also, am I able to buy from Amazon or another website and still receive the Hayward warranty?

Thanks in advance! Sorry for so many questions!

1hp or 3/4hp more than enough hp for a 18' pool.

2-speed will pay for itself in a year maybe two in electrical savings.

Get the bigger filter.

Shop on the internet for the pump and filter separately to get better prices.

Ask the pb to provide the sand for the filter you choose.

Twist lock is not important it either is or isn't. If you have a sub panel you don't need it. If you only have an outlet you need it. They are easily bought or made and don't have to come with the pump.
