What kind of pump would you recommend?

A VS pump would be the cheapest to run but not necessarily the most cost effective.

But first, why does your current pump "need" to be replaced? Sometimes it is more cost effective to simply replace the motor and you can also replace the motor with a two speed motor.

Ok, then the next consideration is if your power company gives you a rebate for a VS. If so, then it might be more economical to go with a VS. If not, a two speed might make more sense since I doubt your electrical rates are that high where a VS would have a lower lifetime cost than a two speed.

Both will save on energy costs, the difference is how fast a VS can make up the up front cost difference from a two speed. Usually a VS cost around $300-$400 more including the surge protector.
