What have I done, valves closed on skimmer/main drain??

Yesterday while pump was off I cleaned out my Intelliflow pump basket. I turned of the valves to the skimmer and drain so water would back flow. I forgot to open them afterwords. This morning I saw that my pool wasn't circulating and I discovered the pump off and my error. The pump is working fine after turning the breaker off and back on this morning.

I'm hoping pump controller was smarter than me. I'm wondering if a safety interface stopped the pump before it was harmed or whether I am now looking at problems down the road

Most pumps should have an overload or overheating protection, I have forgotten our's was running to pump water out and left to come back and find out that it kicked off when water got below the skimmer. Seems to run fine afterwards.
