We have an underground salt water pool in Vancouver BC. Based on our kidney shape pool & design/ location of the water features, our new pool guy recommended we run the pump to prevent the pipes from freezing over winter (instead of covering/ winterizing chemicals). Over the last ~7 years of owning this pool we’ve simply run the filter pump over freezing temps, same as his recommendation and the last pool guy’s recommendation. From what the pool guy said, 90% of pools in the area run their pump through winter.

The new pool guy also advised us to remove the weir door when the pool water freezes over so that the weir doesn’t get frozen shut. This is something we’ve never done before/ never heard of. Is this a good idea? Is it common for the weir door to freeze shut and prevent water flow? Have we simply been lucky that it hasn’t frozen shut during our 7 years of pool ownership?

Does anyone have any input/ thoughts on temporarily removing the weir door during these cold snaps?

Thanks

The weir door will freeze when the water freezes. Do lakes and ponds freeze near you?

Even though you may not have had an issue in the past, the future is never guaranteed. So to be safe, you might consider removing the weir doors to prevent damage. It is fairly easy to do.
